The International Cultural History Symposium Mogersdorf is an event that was launched in 1969 in the southern Burgenland market town of Mogersdorf in Austria . The event, which has a special place in the humanities life in Burgenland and the other participating countries, is held annually. The conference venues are alternating between the participating countries in Burgenland and Styria as well as in Hungary , Slovenia and Croatia . However, the events should also, within the scope of their possibilities , fulfill a political , peace-building and international unifying function.

As part of the symposium, there are always cultural events such as concerts , exhibitions or vernissages , but also excursions .

history

As early as 1964, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Battle of St. Gotthard / Mogersdorf - a united Christian army had defeated the far superior Turks in the Turkish War of 1663/1664 under Lieutenant General Raimund Count Montecuccoli on August 1st - the initial spark for the Mogersdorf Cultural History Symposium. But it was not until 1969 before the first symposium took place in Mogersdorf, in which only Austria was involved. This took place from July 28th to August 2nd.

Slovenia and the Hungarian Vas County joined the symposium as early as 1970 , which made the event more important and laid the foundation for internationality. Croatia also expressed its interest in these conferences in 1970. The final accession did not take place until 1972. Styria and the Hungarian Somogy county were only added later .

organization

The sponsoring association of the International Cultural and History Symposium Mogersdorf is the non-profit Schlösslverein in Mogersdorf, which also organizes events that take place in Burgenland. In other countries it is mostly university institutions such as the University of Graz or the University of Maribor that act as organizers.

The international organizing committee, which consists of two to three members per participating country, meets three times a year. The respective members work at different scientific institutions in their countries . The committee nominates the speakers . It also advises and coordinates the preparation of the respective organizers. Each country may provide two speakers who do not necessarily come from the respective country or who do not have to have the focus of their scientific work there. The speakers are nominated separately by each country. The host country also gives the general opening speech.

Conference proceedings

An essential aspect of the symposium is that the papers are made available to a broad public in printed form after the conferences. These are also exchanged between the sponsoring organizations so that they are not only accessible to a broader public in the host country, but in all participating countries. In Austria these are the Burgenland State Archives and the Burgenland State Library , where these are also available for sale, provided they are not out of stock.
