Internationella Engelska Skolan (IES) is an independent school body in Sweden that was founded in 1993 and operates schools in Sweden and Spain . The company headquarters is attached to the school in Täby .

Teaching

The roots of IES go back to a school in Enskede that was founded in 1993 by the natural history teacher Barbara Bergström , who was born in the United States . Bergström had moved to Sweden in 1968, where she married the Swedish journalist Hans Bergström and taught in Swedish schools, which, in her opinion, frustrated her with inadequate leadership and learning discipline. At IES, around half of the lessons are given in English , with many teachers also coming from English-speaking countries. The orientation of the lessons is institutionally shaped, with formal discipline. In English-language classes, students (as in English-speaking countries) must address their teachers by their last name, such as “Mr / Ms Franzén”. A teacher is assigned to each student as a mentor . Four times a year there is either a certificate or a learning development interview that is intended to facilitate orientation for the student. However, the company came under fire because pupils were already receiving certificates in the 4th grade.

Companies

IES is the largest independent primary school provider in Sweden. At the beginning of the 2020/21 financial year, 28,000 students attended the 39 primary schools in grades 4 to 9 and the grammar school (Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet in Stockholm - Södermalm ). Primary schools there are in Stockholm ( Älvsjö , Bromma , Enskede , Gubbängen , Hässelby , Kista , Liljeholmen , Skärholmen ), Borås , Eskilstuna , Falun , Gävle , Gothenburg , Halmstad , Hässleholm , Huddinge , Järfälla , Jönköping , Karlstad , Linköping , Lund , Länna , Nacka , Örebro , Östersund , Skellefteå , Sundbyberg , Sundsvall , Tyresö , Täby , Umeå , Upplands Väsby , Uppsala and Västerås . In 2019/2020 the company had 2,700 employees.

The company is run as a stock corporation with Barbara Bergström as the owner and chairwoman of the supervisory board. In 2012 she sold the majority stake in the company to TA Associates , an equity fund with ties to universities and research institutes in the United States and an office in London. Anna Sorelius Nordenborg has been the company's managing director since 2019.

In the autumn semester of 2009, the Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet Södermalm, which was previously housed in Enskede, took over the old Katarina realskola building in Södermalm (which was used by the Teaterhögskolan i Stockholm in the meantime).

In 2016, IES AB acquired 50% of the shares in the Spanish school authority Grupo Educativo Elians , which operates three schools with around 1,600 students, for € 5 million .

Awards

For three years in a row, various schools in the company have been named Sweden's best school in the Nutidsorienteringen . In addition, from 2010 to 2012, the majority of IES schools became best schools in their region.
