Twelve teams played against each other twice on a total of 22 match days.
Retreat from Belfast Celtic
On Boxing Day , the rival teams from Linfield FC (Protestants) and Belfast Celtic (Catholics) met at Windsor Park . This derby alone created a potentially dangerous mood. In a duel between Celtic's Jimmy Jones and Linfield's Bob Bryson , the Linfielder player was injured and had to be carried off the pitch. At halftime, the audience was told over loudspeakers that Bryson was hospitalized with a broken leg.
After Linfielder's late equalization, there were tumultuous scenes shortly before the final whistle, as a result of which the Celtic player Jones, who was involved in the momentous duel with Bryson, was surrounded by Linfield fanatics. When Jones was released, he also had a broken leg.
The club's board decided at the end of the season to withdraw its team from the league for safety reasons.
