Isabel Gehweiler
Isabel Gehweiler (born January 23, 1988 in Lörrach ) is a German cellist and composer .
biography
Life and education
Born in 1988 into a family of musicians, Isabel Gehweiler received her first violin lessons at the age of three and switched to the cello at the age of six . From 1997 on she was in the gifted class of Katharina Gohl-Moser's music school at the Basel Music Academy , which she also looked after in terms of chamber music . From 2004 she studied as a young student with Ivan Monighetti in Basel, parallel to school . After graduating from the Free Gymnasium in Basel in 2006, she began her full orchestral degree in 2007 with Gustav Rivinius at the Saar University of Music in Saarbrücken . She then studied abroad from 2010 to 2012 at the Juilliard School of Music in New York with Richard Aaron and completed her orchestral diploma in 2013. From 2013 to 2015 Isabel Gehweiler studied at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) in Zurich with Thomas Grossenbacher in the soloist class (Master of Arts Specialized Performance Soloist) and from 2015 to 2017 in the Master of Arts Music Pedagogy. Since 2017 she has been in a post-graduate training (CAS) in music physiology with Horst Hildebrandt .
Isabel Gehweiler has been teaching cello at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media since 2016. Since 2018 she has been playing in Christoph Marthaler's plays "Übermann OR Die Liebe wird zu Zeiten" ( Deutsches Schauspielhaus ) and in "44 Harmonies from Apartment House 1776" ( Schauspielhaus Zürich ).
Gehweiler lives in Zurich.
Artistic work
Gehweiler works together with artists like the director Christoph Marthaler , the composer Klaus Huber , Thomas Lauck , Theo Brandmüller , the clarinetist Edouard Brunner, the organists Rudolf Lutz , Jörg Abbing and Christian Barthen , the Swiss pop singer Sina and the Slovenian guitarist Aljaz Cvirn . Since 2020 she has been touring with the Swiss harpist Andreas Vollenweider and drummer Walter Keizer as Andreas Vollenweider & Friends with the new program "Quiet Places".
She was a member of the New Juilliard Ensemble (New York) under the direction of Joel Sachs, the Axiom Ensemble of the Juilliard School of Music under Jeffrey Milarsky and the Grenzpunkt Ensemble (Saarbrücken) under the direction of Jonathan Kaell. Gehweiler currently plays in the Ensemble Polywerk Zurich for contemporary music with a focus on electronics and electroacoustics.
She has given concerts as a soloist and chamber musician at festivals such as the Verbier Festival , the Lucerne Festival , the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival , the Richard Wagner Festival Bayreuth 2013 , the Klangspuren Festival 2008 of the Ensemble Modern, the Kronberg Cello Festival , Interlaken Classics , the Saar Music Festival and the Impuls Festival 2013 of the Klangforum Wien .
From 2007 to 2009 Gehweiler played the Miremont "ex Hamann" (1830) from the Baden-Württemberg state collection. Since 2009 she has been playing on a newly built Ersen Aycan instrument.
Awards
Since 1994 Isabel Gehweiler has won numerous competitions such as the international "Charles Hennen Chamber Music Competition in Heerlen, Netherlands" and the international ESTA Student of the Year Award 2004 in Rotterdam. She first gained international attention when she was awarded the European Prize for Young Artists in 2007 at the age of 19 , which had previously been awarded to artists such as Anne-Sophie Mutter and Sol Gabetta . She was also awarded the advancement award from the Baden-Württemberg Art Foundation , the Markgräfler Kulturförderpreis and grants from Rotary International , DAAD , Kiwanis , Notenstein and the Richard Wagner Association.
