The 2013 general election in Iceland took place on April 27, 2013. The 63 members of the national parliament Althing were elected .
Parties
The following eleven parties competed nationwide:
- S: Alliance (Samfylkingin, social democratic ruling party, 19 seats)
- D: Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn, liberal-conservative, 16 seats)
- V: Left-Green Movement (Vinstrihreyfingin - grænt framboð, eco-socialist ruling party, 11 seats)
- B: Progressive Party (Framsóknarflokkurinn, agrarian-liberal, 9 seats)
- T: Dawn (Dögun, emerged from the Citizens' Movement , Hreyfingin ("The Movement") and the Liberal Party of Iceland , 2 seats)
- A: Bright future (Björt framtíð, pro-European, partly emerged from Besti flokkurinn / Best Party, 2 seats)
- J: Regenbogen (Regnboginn, EU-skeptical split from the Left-Greens, 2 seats)
- Þ : Pirate Party (Píratar, 1 seat)
- G: Right-Green People's Party (Hægri Grænir flokkur fólksins, EU-skeptical, libertarian)
- I: Household Party (Flokkur Heimilanna)
- L: Iceland's Democratic Party (Lýðræðisvaktin, breakaway from Dawn)
There are also four parties in individual constituencies:
- H: Humanist Party (Húmanistaflokkurinn, last started in 1999, only in Reykjavík)
- K: Sturla Jónsson (only in Reykjavík South)
- M: Provincial Party (Landsbyggðarflokkurinn, only in the Northwest constituency)
- R: Popular Front of Iceland (Alþýðufylkingin, anti-capitalist, only in Reykjavík)

Further developments and consequences of the election
The election was considered to be crucial for the further course of Iceland's accession negotiations with the European Union .
Prime Minister of Iceland was on May 23, 2013 Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson of the Progress Party, which formed a coalition with the Independence Party.
