Name and origin
According to the current state of research, the name of the river can be traced back to the hypothetical Indo-European root es or is in the meaning "(flowing) water", which in today's languages has narrowed to the solid state of the water ("ice").
A number of other river names are derived from this root:
- Isar , Bavaria
- Isen (river) , Bavaria
- Isel , East Tyrol
- Eisack (Italian: Isarco), South Tyrol
- IJssel , Netherlands
- Isère and Oise ( Isara ), France
The Jizera gave their name to the Jizera Mountains .

Folk song "Hohe Tannen"
The Iser was immortalized in 1923 in the folk song " Hohe Tannen ":
- Tall fir trees show the stars on the Jizera wild jumping tide,
- |: The camp is also a long way off, but you, Rübezahl, take good care of it.: |
- Have given yourself to us, who spins out legends and fairy tales,
- |: and takes shape as a giant in the deepest forest life.: |
- Come to us by the blazing fire, in the mountains on a stormy night!
- |: Shield the tents, the home, the expensive one, come and keep watch with us!: |
- Hear, Rübezahl, what we say to you: People and homeland, they are no longer free!
- |: Swing the club like in the old days, break quarrel and discord in two!: |
