Athletic career

Gerlach comes from the youth of TuS Blau-Weiss Königsdorf , in 1979 he moved to the junior division of 1. FC Köln . There he goes through the youth teams up to the A youth and is also temporarily appointed to the Middle Rhine selection as a B youth . After graduating from high school, in 1986 he moved to SpVg Frechen 20 , which was supervised by former FC professional Wolfgang Rausch , in the Mittelrhein Association . After the club's relegation, he moved on to league rivals Gürzenicher FC Düren after a season , where he worked parallel to his install. With good performances he played his way into the U-21 Middle Rhine selection, where he attracted the attention of FC amateur trainer Roland Koch . In 1988 he returned to 1. FC Köln, where he played alongside players like Rachid Azzouzi , Günther Baerhausen , Karsten Baumann , Alexander Bade and Horst Heldt in the Oberliga Nordrhein . After signing a contract as a contract amateur in April , he temporarily moved to the Bundesliga team's professional squad in the 1989/90 Bundesliga season . There he made his debut on the last match day in the German elite series, when he was substituted on by coach Christoph Daum in the 84th minute for Ralf Sturm on May 12, 1990 . The 1: 3 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt , in which Falko Götz scored the goal for the billy goats, was his only professional appearance.

Although the previous amateur team coach Erich Rutemöller took over the professional team after Daum's dismissal in the summer of 1990, Gerlach stayed with the amateurs. Under Bernd Krauss and his successor Rainer Nicot , he was a regular player there, but after relegating to the Mittelrhein Association League, his ambitions to become a professional team were superfluous. Under coach Eberhard Vogel , he went straight back to the league with the team, where Wolfgang Jerat took over as coach. This promoted Gerlach to captain of the team , the team was ninth in the table.

Due to the lack of prospects at 1. FC Köln, Gerlach followed a lucrative offer from league competitor Bonner SC in the summer of 1993 . Under coach Peter Nover , he qualified as sixth in the league season 1993/94 for the newly introduced regional league . After successful relegation in the first year, the club slipped into the relegation battle in the following season. After several coach changes, Gerlach left the club during the winter break for SV Baesweiler in the fourth-class Oberliga Nordrhein. At the end of 1996 Gerlach was diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia, as a result of which he ended his active career there.

In November 2006 Gerlach briefly returned to the football field for his home club TuS Blau-Weiss Königsdorf , but after Achilles tendon complaints he had to end his comeback in the regional league quickly.

Gerlach and his family are based in Königsdorf, where he runs the heating and plumbing master company that his father took over.
