The Jakowlew Ja-3 ( Russian Яковлев Я-3 , also AIR-3 , АИР-3) was a stripped, single-engine two-seat high-wing aircraft.
development
It was created after a fundraising campaign organized by the Moscow children's magazine Pionerskaya Pravda . Yakovlev , at that time a student at the Zhukovsky Military Academy , was able to build the Ja-3 in the summer of 1929. It was based on the Ja-2 biplane . The aircraft was manufactured in the Menschinski factory GAS -39 between April and June 1929. It received the Cyrillic aircraft registration СССР-310 and the first flight was made in September. In 1930 the Ja-3 was developed into the Ja-4. Changes were made primarily in the area of the wings and the landing gear, with the Ja-3 slats and flaps as well as a main landing gear with a split axis.
Flight operations
From August 26, 1929, the students of the Zhukovsky Military Aviation Academy made repeated flights from Mineralnye Vody to Moscow . The 1835 kilometer route was flown through on September 6, 1929 by A. I. Filin and his companion A. F. Korolkow at an average speed of 166.8 km / h. On this flight, the world records for range and average flight speed could be set again.
construction
The fuselage of the aircraft had a wooden frame covered with fabric, which was planked with light metal in the engine area and with plywood in the cockpit area. The Ja-3 was designed as a high -wing aircraft, the wings were supported by two parallel struts on each side towards the fuselage. The three tanks with a total volume of 176 l were located in the center section of the wing. Like the fuselage, the tail unit was covered with fabric. The main landing gear of the Ja-3 received a continuous axle. The Jakowlew Ja-4 was manufactured with a modified chassis .
