Career
James Wright began his career as a hockey player with the Vancouver Giants , who selected him in the first round of the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft as the ninth player overall and for which he was active in the Canadian Junior League Western Hockey League from 2005 to 2009 and in 2006 Ed Chynoweth Cup won as WHL champion. In addition, the team won the 2007 Memorial Cup , the final tournament for the championship of the Canadian Hockey League . During his time with the Vancouver Giants, the attacker was selected in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth round as a total of 117 players. For the Lightning he made his debut in the National Hockey League on October 3, 2009 in the game against the Atlanta Thrashers . The left-shooter scored his first NHL goal on October 22, 2009 in the home game against the San Jose Sharks .
In December 2011, the Bolts and Mike Vernace transferred him to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Mike Kostka and Evan Oberg . After the NHL lockout ended in January 2013, he was put on the waiver list and selected by the Winnipeg Jets . This did not extend his contract, which expired after the 2013/14 season, so he moved to Europe for the first time and joined the KHL Medveščak Zagreb in the Continental Hockey League . After a season he returned to North America and signed a one-year contract with the New York Islanders before he returned to the KHL with Admiral Vladivostok .
In November 2017 it was exchanged for Martin St. Pierre from Barys Astana .
International
Wright made his debut for the Canadian national team ahead of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics . He was used in three preparation games, but then not called into the Olympic squad.
