Life

Jan van Bronkhorst attended the Brothers' School of Life Together (Broeders des gemeenen levens) in Nijmegen . On October 10, 1526 he was admitted to the Universitas Studii Coloniensis at the artist faculty . In November 1527 he received his doctorate to the Bachelor of Artium, in March 1529 he received the licentiate and in December 1531 the Magister artium . In the same year he was appointed professor of philosophy at the Montanerburse belonging to Cologne University . From 1532 he was also Bursen regent and in 1534 he was the annual dean of the artist faculty. He read on mathematics and Greek and also worked as a translator of Greek works.

In order to help the University of Rostock , which was declining in the turmoil of the Reformation , to regain a reputation, Andreas Eggerdes was sent to Cologne in 1540 on behalf of the Rostock Senate to recruit teachers for the Rostock Academy with financial help from several Hanseatic cities . Bronkhorst, Gisbert Longolius from Utrecht and Johannes Strubbe from Deventer were among those courted by the councilors . In 1542 they came to Rostock, where they were enrolled together on November 11th at the Philosophical Faculty by the then rector Eggerdes. Bronkhorst's reception as council professor of mathematics took place on December 13th. In the semesters 1543/44 he was rector of the university, 1544/45 dean of the faculty. He was also an inspector of the Great City School .

Bronkhorst left Rostock in 1546 and became rector of the collegiate school in Deventer. Here he obtained the title Licentiate iur. utr. In 1548 he married Clara de Coster, daughter of the Deventer mayor Johannis de Coster. Their son Everard van Bronkhorst (1554–1627) became a doctor iur. and professor in Leiden . As a Reformer exposed to the religious persecution of the Duke of Alba , Bronkhorst left Deventer in 1569 and went back to Cologne. Here he died the following year. When the clergy refused to have a burial in consecrated ground, the mayor Constantin von Lyskirchen had him buried.
