Jazz à Juan
Jazz à Juan (alternatively: Antibes Jazz Festival ) is the name of the jazz festival in southern France in the seaside resort of Juan-les-Pins near Antibes , which takes place annually on nine consecutive evenings in July. It is considered one of the best summer jazz festivals.
history
The main reason for choosing the location for the event was the fact that Sidney Bechet spent the last years of his life here in the warm climate of the Côte d'Azur . The first festival took place on July 7, 1960, making it one of the early European jazz festivals. The initiators were Jacques Souplet and Jacques Hebey. The orchestra of Wilbur de Paris (with Charles Mingus ), Charles Mingus and his quintet together with Bud Powell as a guest, Albert Mangelsdorff , Dusko Goykovich , Dizzy Gillespie and Rosetta Tharpe also performed at this premiereon. In the following years, the festival attracted numerous jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong , Ella Fitzgerald , Duke Ellington , Keith Jarrett , Miles Davis , Sonny Rollins , Cab Calloway , Oscar Peterson , John Coltrane , Erroll Garner , Chick Corea , Sarah Vaughan . The Modern Jazz Quartet , Stan Getz , Count Basie , Lionel Hampton , Gil Evans , Ray Charles also played here. The blues is also taken into account. a. Big names like Chuck Berry , BB King and Luther Allison at the festival.
With the exception of 1971 and 1972, when it took place in Nice as an exception , the venue in Juan-les-Pins is always in the open air, for example in the Pinède Gould and some off- site venues such as the pine forests at the boules club.
Prizes are given out regularly at the festival, e. B. Hans Koller and Inge Brandenburg received prizes as best soloists at the first festival.
The organizers were Norbert Gamsohn (who also initiated regular television broadcasts) from 1973 to 1991, Victor Lévy-Perrault from 1992 to 2000, Harry Lapp from 2001 to 2009 and Jean-René Palacio since 2010. The organizer is the Tourist Office (Office de Tourisme) of Juan-Les-Pins and Antibes. It has been organized by the Société des bains de mer de Monaco since 2010 .
