Jean-Yves Klein (* 1960 in Montreal ) is a Canadian - German painter and sculptor . He lives and works in Berlin and the Peloponnese .

Vita and work

Born in Montreal in 1960, he emigrated to Paris at the age of 16 and enrolled at the Académie Saint-Roch in 1976 with Jean Bertholle, a pupil of Roger Bissière , whose work turned out to be formative for Klein. Four years later in 1980, Jean-Yves Klein moved to the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts , Paris , where he founded the Graffiti Group in 1981. Olivier Debré was professor there for two more years before Jean-Yves Klein moved to Berlin in 1982 and continued his studies at the Berlin University of the Arts . This was followed by a study trip to the American art metropolis New York in 1985. There he met Willem de Kooning in his studio. In terms of style, Klein developed for the first time from the lyrical abstraction of the École de Paris to the free, generous-looking painting of the American Abstract Expressionists, an influence that was to remain formative. He then received his master class from Martin Engelman in 1986 . In 1987 he was awarded the scholarship to promote young talent. The Starke Foundation granted him a studio grant in 1992. It followed u. a. Cooperation with the art dealer Matthias Arndt and curators Christoph Tannert

In the spring of 2008, a painterly and lyrical cooperation arose with the writers Jan Wagner , Uwe Kolbe and Robert Weber on Kyparissa . The artist's book Auf der Pirsch / Lietzenlieder was created together with Uwe Kolbe . In the same year Josef Laggner asked the artist for the artistic design of the gendarmerie. For this he created several interior sculptures as well as a monumental wall relief, which was praised by art critics. The New York Times described the work as "the restaurant's wow factor". In the Dionysian manner, those represented in Klein's paintings enjoy the richness of the food. The topos , borrowed from Greek mythology , also represents a reference to the context of the location. The painting Los Borrachos by Diego Velázquez , whose narrative Jean-Yves Klein transposed into his own formal language, served as an inspiring model . Klein worked on the larch wood, which is almost 15 meters long and 5 meters high, for six months. Here he used a chainsaw and hatchet. Other works in public space include a. in the Fischerhütte am Schlachtensee , in Poppi , Tuscany , in Sucy-en-Brie and in the Kunsthaus Taunusstein. In his other oeuvre, too, he preferred the primacy of color, the motif taking a back seat to the weighty intrinsic effect of the coloring. With a lot of verve , Jean-Yves Klein unfolded a colorful panorama of mythological and art-historical quotations, which he symbolizes in his own painterly thinking and feeling. He prefers to use the medium of painting or sculpture. He usually forms the latter with a specially developed technique, where he uses a chainsaw and saws the figures from a block of wood.

His works are in private collections in Brazil , New York , Portugal , Israel and Germany .
