Jelena Jurjewna Gagarina ( Russian Елена Юрьевна Гагарина ; born April 17, 1959 in Sapoljarny ) is a Soviet - Russian art historian .

Life

Gagarina is the eldest daughter of the cosmonaut Yuri Alexejewitsch Gagarin and his wife Valentina Ivanovna Gagarina , née Gorjatschewa (1935-2020), who worked as a doctor in the laboratory of the flight center administration. Because of her father, Gagarina grew up in the Closed City of Svyosdny Gorodok . She did a variety of sports, played the piano and was interested in art . She graduated from school with a gold medal. Then she studied at the Lomonosov University Moscow (MGU) in the Department of Art History and Theory of the Faculty of History , graduating in 1981 as an art historian.

In September 1981 Gagarina became a research assistant at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow (GMII). She was initially the custodian of the English graphics department and then vice-head of the graphics department. Her role model was Boris Borissowitsch Piotrowski . In 1989, after defending her dissertation on English book illustrations from the mid-18th century , she received her doctorate as a candidate for art history . She regrets that Lenin's cabinet in Moscow's Kremlin was closed and emptied during Yeltsin 's presidency . She thinks that the Kremlin Congress Palace spoils the overall impression and should be torn down the easiest way.

On April 12, 2001, Gagarina was appointed General Director of the Moscow Kremlin State Museum of Culture Reserve by Ukas President Putin , who visited the Gagarin family in Svyosdny Gorodok on the 40th anniversary of the first cosmonaut flight. In 2005 and again in 2009 she became a member of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO Affairs . Since 2010 she has been a member of the Council for Culture of the Patriarchate of Moscow and All Russia . She is an honorary member of the Russian Art Academy . She is a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). In 2014, she signed the appeal by the cultural workers of the Russian Federation to support Putin's policy on Ukraine and Crimea .

Gagarina was married to the camera operator Elisbar Konstantinowitsch Karawajew in the first marriage and is married in the second marriage to the chemist and head of the restoration department of the Moscow Kremlin Vladimir Arkadyevich Vytschuschanin. Her daughter from her first marriage Ekaterina married the diplomat Pawel Vnukow and lives in London . Gagarina's sister Galina Jurjewna Gagarina is an economist .
