Life
Hahn began playing the instrument as the son of a guitarist at the age of 7; at age 11 he was a member of Bobby Wiley's band and appeared on local television. After high school, he studied at Wichita State University . From 1963 he worked as a guitarist in San Francisco and from 1964 played in the quintet of John Handy , with whom he had a legendary appearance at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1965 (live album). In 1967 he recorded his first fusion-oriented album, u. a. with Jack DeJohnette . In 1968 and 1969 he worked in Gary Burton's quartet , toured with them through Japan, North America and Europe, where he took part in the Berlin Jazz Days and recorded 3 albums. In 1970 he founded the Jerry Hahn Brotherhood , with whom he played a largely country- oriented jazz rock music and recorded for Columbia . He was also involved in recordings by Bob Moses ( Fantasy ), Bennie Wallace ( The Talk of the Town , 1993), David Friesen and Nancy King / Glen Moore .
In 1972 he was appointed to Wichita State University , where he headed the jazz department. He then taught at the Colorado Institute of Art from 1992 . He has been living in Wichita again since 2004 . His monthly column for Guitar Player magazine from 1973 to 1978 resulted in the textbook Complete Jerry Hahn Method For Jazz Guitar .
Hahn has incorporated folk and hippie influences as well as the jazz tradition into his playing; it alternates between a fresh and spontaneous handling of clichés, free improvisations and tonal melodies. These qualities led him to play with musicians as diverse as Miles Davis , John Coltrane , Ornette Coleman and Stan Getz . He is the model for numerous fusion guitarists and influenced John Abercrombie , Bill Frisell , Pat Metheny and Grant Geissman .
