Jindřich Nečas (1999)

Jindřich Nečas (born December 14, 1929 in Prague ; † December 5, 2002 ) was a Czech mathematician and university professor .

Life, career, achievements

After childhood and school in the small town of Mělník , Nečas studied in the years 1948–1952 at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Charles University in Prague . After a year-long stay at the Technical University in Prague , he learned and taught at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences from 1953 to 1977 . There doctorate he under the direction of Ivo Babuška in 1957. In 1964 habilitated he become the teachers and received in 1966 the highest in the former Czechoslovakia academic degree of Doctor of (Mathematics and Physics) Science ( Dr. Sc. ) .

At the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Nečas was head of the department for partial differential equations from 1962 to 1976. At the same time he worked at the Charles University, where he headed the department of analysis from 1967 to 1972 . In 1977 he ended his work for the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in favor of his work at Charles University and became head of the Mathematical Modeling Department . Most recently he was professor emeritus at the Charles University.

Nečas supervised a total of eight doctoral students , including the two Czech mathematicians Svatopluk Fučík and Vladimír Šverák .

Nečas held a number of visiting professorships and research stays at foreign universities. So he was in Rome , Pisa and Paris . Since 1995 he has been a member of the faculty at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb , Illinois, USA.

Nečas received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Dresden . In 1998, he was the then president Vaclav Havel , the Silver Medal of the Czech Republic awarded.

Jindřich Nečas made significant achievements in several mathematical fields , for example in the field of partial differential equations , nonlinear functional analysis and fluid mechanics . He significantly promoted the development of modern functional analytical methods for solving the elliptical partial differential equations .

Jindřich Nečas wrote about 180 scientific publications as an author or co-author . Of these, one of the most remarkable is the work On Leray's self-similar solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations , presented in 1996 , in which Nečas, together with the mathematicians Michael Růžička and Vladimír Šverák, solves a classic problem posed by Jean Leray in 1934.

Some of the monographs that he wrote or co-authored were also widely used . Particularly noteworthy are his monograph Les méthodes directes en théorie des équations elliptiques (1967) - which was finally reissued in 2012 in English as Direct methods in the theory of elliptic equations by Springer-Verlag - as well as the two with participation Co-authored monographs Spectral Analysis of Nonlinear Operators (1973) and Solution of Variational Inequalities in Mechanics (1982).
