Joan of Arc is an American emo band from Chicago , Illinois .

Band history

Joan of Arc was formed in 1995 after the previous band Cap'n Jazz broke up . After the departure of the guitarists Davey von Bohlen and Victor Villarreal, the three remaining members - Tim Kinsella, his brother Mike and Sam Zurick - formed the band Red Blue Yellow together with Jeremy Boyle , then called themselves Joan of Arc and signed with the emo label Jade Tree Records . After the release of several singles and an EP, their first album A Portable Model Of was released in 1997 . The band continued their musical experiments on the albums How Memory Works (1998), Live in Chicago (1999) and The Gap (2000). Despite some bad criticism, the band was also able to gain a loyal fan base in Europe. The band members' love of experimentation ultimately led to numerous side projects, but also to a constantly changing line-up, so that singer Tim Kinsella was the only permanent member of the group over the years, although he also regularly worked as a solo artist himself.

In 2003 a Joan of Arc album was released with So Much Staying Alive and Lovelessness . The material came from Tim Kinsella and Sam Zurick. During the recording sessions, material was created for a second record, which came out under the title In Rape Fantasy and Terror Sex We Trust . With Make Believe , Joan of Arc created another side project in 2003, in which the brothers Kinsella, Sam Zurick and Bobby Burg are involved. Even so, Joan of Arc albums kept appearing on the market. In 2004 the vibraphone player Cale Parks was added for the recordings of Joan of Arc, Dick Cheney, Mark Twain ... In 2005 the band switched to Polyvinyl Records . In 2007 the current line-up was formed and released the single Many Times I've Mistaken and the album Orchard Vale . This was followed in 2008 by the single My Summer-Long High Wipeout and the long player Boo Human .

Side projects

style

Joan of Arc is known for the use of electronics, samples and multi-tracking, which can escalate into wild sound collages like on So Much Staying Alive and Lovelessness . Some of the songs on The Gap album contain over 100 tracks. Joan of Arc's text and cover design are often intentionally ambiguous, humorous, or confused. For example, the album Live in Chicago 1999 is not a live album, rather the title is intended to suggest that the band members lived in Chicago in 1999. Live in Muenster 2003 , on the other hand, is actually a live album, recorded on platform 22 in Münster.
