Joel Hanley (* 8. June 1991 in Keswick , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who since July 2018 with the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League is under contract and in parallel for their farm team , the Texas Stars in the American Hockey League on the position of the defender plays.
Career
Hanley spent the beginning of his junior years in the lower class junior leagues in his home province of Ontario , where he was active first for the Georgina Ice and later for two years until the summer of 2010 for the Newmarket Hurricanes in the Ontario Junior Hockey League . With the start of the 2010/11 season, the defender moved to the University of Massachusetts Amherst to pursue his studies in the United States . In parallel, he played for the following four years for the university team in Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .
After completing his studies, the undrafted free agent was hired by the Portland Pirates from the American Hockey League in March 2014 by means of an amateur trial contract until the end of the season. He came to 15 missions before his trial contract was expanded into a position for the entire 2014/15 season in August of the same year . Through the Pirates, Hanley recommended himself to other teams, and so the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League became aware of the defender. These finally signed the free agent for one year in July 2015. The French-Canadians use the defensive player mainly in the AHL with their farm team , the St. John's IceCaps . However, he made his debut for Montréal in the NHL during the season. His expiring contract was prematurely extended for another year in June 2016. The following season Hanley continued to spend in St. John's, peppered with occasional assignments with the Canadiens.
In the summer of 2017, the Canadian changed clubs - again as a free agent. He joined the Arizona Coyotes for a year , but he was not able to assert himself in the long run. In addition to five NHL appearances, 61 games were recorded for cooperation partner Tucson Roadrunners at the end of the season . For the 2017/18 season he moved again as a player without a contract to the Dallas Stars organization , where he was also part of the AHL in the Texas Stars squad for the time being.
