Johann Carl August Graf Huyn (born February 10, 1812 in Szigeth ; † September 1, 1889 in Gmunden ) was an Austrian Feldzeugmeister and member of the staff of Field Marshal Radetzkys in the years 1840-48.

Life

He comes from the noble family Huyn, who was raised in the count status . His military career began after graduating from the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt in 1830 as an ensign in the Austrian Infantry Regiment No. 54. In 1831 he was appointed lieutenant and transferred to Galicia . In 1832 he was a battalion adjutant in Prague and in 1835 as a first lieutenant in the quartermaster's staff. Promoted to captain in 1840 , he worked in the staff of Field Marshal Radetzky in Italy and was a diplomatic negotiator in Italy from 1840 to 1848.

After the revolution of 1849 he was appointed major and later lieutenant colonel and served as chief of staff of the III. Army Corps confirmed. He earned several awards in the Battle of Novara (1849) .

Further promotions followed; on November 5 he was promoted to colonel and on July 25, 1857 to major general , he was also commander in chief of the 4th Army Corps . He took part in the Austrian campaigns in 1859 as the commander of a brigade in Tyrol . Then from 1860 to 1865 he was head of the scientific office of the General Staff.

On June 3, 1865 he was promoted to field marshal lieutenant , the following year he was assigned to the 8th German Army Corps as an Austrian military adviser , and later to the VII German Army Corps. In 1867 Count Huyn was in command of several infantry units in Austria, and in 1870 he was Commander-in-Chief of Prague with the associated promotion to Feldzeugmeister on November 28, 1871.

In 1874 he was appointed President of the Supreme Military Justice Senate . Just two years later, on July 1, 1876, Count Huyn was retired at his own request. He died on September 1, 1889 in Gmunden.

Johann Carl Graf Huyn married Natalie von Sarnthein on January 28, 1850 in Gerstburg near Bozen . The couple had seven children, including the last Austro-Hungarian military governor of Galicia , Karl Georg Graf Huyn , the last German-speaking Prince Archbishop of Prague, Paul Graf Huyn and the commander in the last great cavalry battle in Europe, Otto Aloys Graf Huyn .
