Johann Karl Plümicke

Johann Karl Plümicke (born August 19, 1782 in Breslau ; † February 26, 1855 there ) was a Prussian major general and director of the artillery and engineering school in Berlin.

Life

His parents were the Obersalzamt in Breslau, Emanuel Lamert Plümcke, and his wife Anna Friederike, née Horn. Several members of the Plümicke family served in the artillery; for example Ernst Ludwig Ferdinand Plümicke († 1818) received the order Pour le Mérite during the First Coalition War .

Career

Plümicke came on November 13, 1799 as a bombardier to the 2nd Artillery Regiment of the Prussian Army . On October 8, 1804, he was transferred to the 3rd Artillery Regiment as a second lieutenant . In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the defense of Wroclaw and went into captivity after the fortress surrendered. After the Peace of Tilsit he came to the provisional artillery company in Glatz in 1808 and from there on February 21, 1809 the Silesian Artillery Brigade, where Plümicke was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on November 29, 1813 . During the Wars of Liberation , he earned the Iron Cross 2nd class at the Battle of the Katzbach . He fought near Leipzig and in combat near Eisenach, where he also received the Iron Cross 1st class. Plümicke also took part in the battle at Saint-Mihiel and the sieges of Maubeuge, Landrecies, Philippevielle, Rocroi and Givet.

On July 11, 1815, he was promoted to captain and on October 21, 1815, he was transferred as an adjutant to the Inspector General of Artillery, Prince August of Prussia . On November 18, 1817 he was promoted to major and aggregated to the 5th Artillery Brigade . On July 19, 1819 he became a department commander in the 6th Artillery Brigade. From there he was transferred to the United Artillery and Engineering School and the General War School in Berlin on August 23, 1823 . In 1824 he joined the Outlaw Society Scholars' Club . In 1825 he was awarded the service cross . On March 30, 1829 he was assigned to lead the 3rd artillery brigade and on April 3, 1829 he was appointed brigadier. On November 18, 1831, he was appointed director of the artillery and engineering school. He became a member of the Examination Board for Artillery Premier Lieutenant on January 21, 1832. On March 30, 1833 Plümicke rose to lieutenant colonel and on March 30, 1835 to colonel . As such, on January 30, 1836, he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of the Zähringer Lion . He continued to be the director of the school, even when on June 16, 1836 he was made president of the administration of the secret laboratory in Spandau with an annual allowance of 200 thalers. On September 10, 1840, he was promoted to major general. With the award of the Red Eagle Order II. Class with Oak Leaves, Plümicke took his leave on May 28, 1842 with the statutory pension .

From 1838 to 1849 he was the editor-in-chief of the archive for the artillery and engineering officers of the German Reichsheeres , a specialist journal for artillery officers .

Prince August wrote in his assessment in 1828: “He has a very legal, but somewhat irritable character, a lot of knowledge and punctuality, has excellent knowledge of artillery, fortification and mathematics, the gift of communicating them very well as a teacher and has a practical manual for Prussian artillery officers written. He is an excellent officer, has served with distinction, deserves a special promotion and would qualify as Chief of the General Staff at the General Inspection of Artillery and Director of the Artillery and Engineering School ”. After this assessment he became director of the school in 1831.

family

On October 22, 1817 he married Charlotte Gedike (1790–1848), the daughter of the professor and school director Ludwig Ernst Gottlob Gaedicke, in Leipzig; she was buried in the old garrison cemetery after her death on February 10, 1848 . Their daughter Charlotte Marie Friederike (* July 5, 1819) married Lieutenant Freiherr von der Lütke († before 1848).
