Johann Christoph von Preysing

Johann Christoph Freiherr von Preysing (born December 6, 1576 at Oberndorf Castle near Ebersberg , † November 23, 1632 in Hohenaschau ) was a Bavarian statesman. Among other things, he was a privy councilor , envoy and close advisor to Elector Maximilian I and helped Bavaria to strengthen its position within the empire and develop into an early modern state. Through extensive acquisitions of territory, he became the founder of the Hohenauschauer line of the von Preysing family .

Origin and family

Johann Christoph Freiherr von Preysing, also with the first name Hans instead of Johann, came from the Bavarian noble family von Preysing (see also list of Bavarian noble families ). His parents were Thomas von Preysing and Maria, née von Closen . He was married three times: first marriage from 1608 to Eva Benigna von Freyberg , second marriage to Anna Jakobe von Rechberg , who died in 1622, and third marriage to Justina von Fugger . From his first marriage came Johann Franz von Preysing , canon in Salzburg and Passau and 1670–1687 Bishop of Chiemsee.

Bavarian statesman

Preysing first attended a grammar school in Munich and took up law studies (1593-1603), for which he attended the universities of Ingolstadt , Siena and Padua . He was then court advisor in Munich (1604–1615) and Vitztum in Landshut . In the Thirty Years' War he took part in the campaign of the Catholic League against Bohemia and the Upper Palatinate. In 1621 he was appointed governor of the Upper Palatinate and privy councilor, from 1629 he administered the Obersthofmarschallamt and took over it in 1631.

For the period from 1608 to 1632 he was one of the most important collaborators of Maximilian I. His knowledge as a lawyer distinguished him as well as his basic humanistic attitude and his pronounced Catholic faith. In Bavarian services he was active several times as an envoy, he toured the imperial courts of Vienna and Prague, took part in imperial assemblies and league days and negotiated with the neighboring principalities.

Founder of the Preysing-Hohenaschau line

Johann Christoph von Preysing, who initially owned Altenpreysing and Kopfsburg, came into the possession of the Hohenaschau and Hofmark Söllhuben rulers when he married Eva Benigna von Freyberg . He also bought the Reichersbeuern , Sachsenkam and Greiling court brands .

In his honor, the Bavarian King Ludwig I had a bust set up in the Hall of Fame in Munich , left wing wall, in 1853 . It was destroyed in 1944 and no longer restored or reproduced. Today a plaque commemorates it.
