Johann Dietrich von Manstein

Johann Dietrich von Manstein (born March 5, 1706 - † October 4, 1759 in Stettin ) was a royal Prussian colonel and commander of the Dragoon Regiment No. 2 (Krockow). He was a knight of the Pour le Mérite and heir of Schabenow.

Johann Dietrich was a son of the Prussian captain Georg Wilhelm von Manstein († around 1736) - heir to Kaukern - and his wife Anna Louise von der Trenck . He was a first cousin of the Prussian major general Christoph Hermann von Manstein . His brother Georg Friedrich von Manstein was also a Prussian colonel.

Military career

He became a page in 1719 with Queen Sophie Dorothea of ​​Hanover (1687–1757). There he learned how to deal with the court and the basic military principles. In August 1724 he became a flag junior in Infantry Regiment No. 21 (Marwitz). Since he had behaved well when officers were sought for the new Dragoons regiments in June 1725, he received a transfer as an ensign in the Dragoons Regiment (Wense).

When General Wense died in September, the regiment was divided. General von Platen received five companies, and General Sonsfeld took over the remaining five companies . Manstein stayed with Sonsfeld. In January 1732 he was promoted to lieutenant. In May 1734 he took part in the Rhine campaign with the regiment ; his winter quarters were in the Münsterland. In October 1735 he came to the quarter in Westphalia. After the war in 1736, the regiment returned to the camp in Pomerania in 1736. But in June 1737 it was moved to Kleve . During the first Silesian War he was assigned to guard the army camp in Brandenburg. There he was promoted to staff captain in August 1740. After the camp was closed, the regiment came to Magdeburg , where it remained until July 1742. The regiment was then transferred to Silesia , initially to the Glatz area , but in August to Oels .

In the second Silesian War he came to Bohemia in 1744 with the army under Schwerin . After the conquest of Prague , his regiment was assigned to the army of Lieutenant General von Nassau . The army captured Tabor and Budweis . It was not a quiet location because the Austrians waged a small war there . In May 1745 they withdrew via Patschkau and Jägerndorf. The Austrians attacked the withdrawing Prussians. Captain Manstein was injured in the head during the battle, for which he was awarded the Pour le Mérite by the king . In the battle of Hohenfriedberg the regiment remained in the rear meeting on the left wing. Afterwards he was transferred to Upper Silesia under Nassau to fight the insurrection . There he fought in the battle near Kunzendorf (July 1, 1745). He was also present at the siege of Cosel , which surrendered on September 5th. After the peace the regiment was transferred to Lüben in Silesia .

In October 1747 Manstein was promoted to major and received a squadron that was stationed in Freystedt. In June 1755 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

With the beginning of the Seven Years' War he was put on the march as part of the Schwerin Army in August 1756 and was sent to winter camp in Namslau. In April 1757 he came to the siege of Prague. On May 6, 1757 he took part in the Battle of Prague , where he was wounded in the head and shot in the hip. He was first treated in the Prussian hospital in Margarethen-Kloster and then came to Dresden . On December 2, 1757 he was back with his regiment near Parchwitz in Silesia and fought in the battle of Leuthen on December 5. When the war flared up again in April 1758, the regiment was assigned to guard the camp near Prostnitz during the battle of Zorndorf . In the battle of Hochkirch he led the Dragoon Regiment No. 2 (Krockow) successfully against the Austrian cavalry.

On April 14, 1759, von Manstein was promoted to colonel . In the battle of Kunersdorf on August 12, 1759, he was seriously injured by a shot in the foot. He came to Küstrin and on August 14th by ship to Stettin. He died there on October 4, 1759 of wound fever .

He was married to Marianna Helene von Braun (born September 28, 1723, † February 4, 1787). This was the eldest daughter of Hans Christoph von Braun († 1768) on Zöllnitz (Zölling) and Gillersdorf and his wife Ursula von Tschammer und Osten (* December 27, 1704; † May 25, 1791) from the house of Niederschirne. Manstein had the following children with his wife:
