Johann Ernst Gustav von Roehl

Johann Ernst Gustav von Roehl (born December 26, 1799 in Berlin ; † August 3, 1867 at the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

origin

His parents were the Prussian major general Ernst Andreas von Röhl (1761-1830) and his wife Friedrike Wilhelmine, née von Fiebig (1765-1838).

Military career

Roehl attended the Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster and joined the Brandenburg artillery brigade of the Prussian Army as a gunner on March 1, 1814 . In the summer campaign of 1815 he took part in the battles of Ligny and Waterloo . For Ligny he received the Iron Cross, 2nd class. He also took part in the sieges of Maubeuge , Namur , Landrecies , Philippeville , Rocroi and Givet . On June 9, 1815, he became second lieutenant and on May 23, 1816, he joined the 7th Artillery Brigade. In 1816/17 Roehl was assigned to the United Artillery and Engineering School and then to the teaching squadron until 1819 . Then on April 23, 1822, he was promoted to lieutenant prime minister. From 1824 to 1826 he was adjutant of the 2nd artillery inspection. On March 31, 1831 he was promoted to captain . On October 13, 1841, he became an artillery officer in Cologne . His promotion to major of the 8th Artillery Brigade took place on February 27, 1844. On April 6, 1848 he was appointed second in command of Koblenz and the Ehrenbreitstein fortress. On May 24, 1848, he was assigned to the 8th Artillery Brigade and from there on June 16, 1830, he was transferred to the Jülich Fortress as a commander . There he was on March 23, 1852 lieutenant colonel and on July 22, 1852 commander of the Guards Artillery Regiment. On February 17, 1855, he received a gift of 200 thalers for the move from Jülich to Berlin . Then on March 22, 1855 he became a colonel . On April 4, 1857 he became the first in command of Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein, and then on April 19, 1857 Major General. On May 14, 1868, he was appointed inspector of the 4th Artillery Inspection. He was a member of the Berlin Masonic Lodge Zum Pegasus .

On March 2, 1861, he received the Grand Commander's Cross of the Oldenburg House and Merit Order of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig . On October 18, 1861, he was appointed lieutenant general. On March 17, 1863, Roehl received the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves. To celebrate his 50th anniversary on March 1, 1864, he was awarded the Order of the Crown, First Class. Shortly afterwards presented Roehl on 5 April 1864, pension for disposition .

During the mobilization for the war of 1866 , he was appointed deputy commanding general of the VIII Army Corps on May 17, 1866 . Released from this position on September 8, 1866, Roehl received the character of General of the Infantry on January 3, 1867 .

Von Roehl's grave is preserved in field 3 of the cemetery in Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein.

family

Roehl married Therese Karoline Helene Johanne Georgeon (* 1800 in Paris ; † 28 February 1875) in Cologne on May 2, 1824 . She was the daughter of the French General Georgeon. The couple had several children, including Ernst (1825–1881), a Prussian major and paleobotanist.
