Johann Ernst von Schmettau

Johann Ernst von Schmettau (* 1703 in Zeitz ; † May 1, 1764 in Neustadt (Upper Silesia) ) was a Prussian major general , chief of the cuirassier regiment No. 4 and heir to Rohrlach (east of Hirschberg in the Principality of Jauer) in Silesia .

His parents were the royal Prussian court advisor Friedrich Wilhelm von Schmettau (* 1670; † June 22, 1732) and his wife Sophia Dorothea, née Hünecke (1683–1763), daughter of captain Christian Leberecht Hünecke.

Military career

Schmettau went into Prussian service as early as 1718 and came into the regiment of Margrave Albrecht Friedrich. In 1730 he became a lieutenant, in 1739 he was given the company of Colonel von Werdeck, and on December 6, 1744 he became a major . On June 30, 1751 he became a lieutenant colonel , on June 13, 1755 he became a colonel . On December 5, 1757 he was promoted to major general. During his career he fought in the battle of Mollwitz and was wounded near Hohenfriedberg . For his achievements in the battle of Kesselsdorf Schmettau received the order Pour le Mérite . He also took part in the battles near Prague , Kolin , Breslau and Leuthen .

During the Seven Years' War in 1758 he was given cuirassier regiment No. 4, which previously belonged to Lieutenant General Friedrich Leopold von Geßler . In 1759 he was at the battle of Kunersdorf . Schmettau commanded a corps in Silesia with the task of observing the enemy. At the beginning of 1760 the corps - consisting of ten squadrons and 15 battalions - stood near Görlitz in Lusatia. In September 1762 he received the order to advance with his corps in Upper Silesia and to collect contributions from the cities .

On July 29, 1763 he bought the Rohrlach estate and the Silesian Inkolat from Baron von Hochberg . He died in Neustadt in Upper Silesia in 1764.

Schmettau married Anna Sophie Schlüter (* 1712 - May 1747) daughter of a notary from Rathenow in 1730. The couple had two sons and several daughters, including:
