Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst von Beneckendorff and Hindenburg (born November 25, 1774 on Sonnenstrahl in Prussia; † April 23, 1847 in Dresden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general , commander of Thorn and an honorary citizen of the city since 1837 .

Life

origin

His parents were Johann Otto von Beneckendorff (1747–1827) and his wife Luise Helene, née Countess zu Eulenburg-Prassen (1745–1779). His father was the owner of Keimfallen (Heiligenbeil district) and Neudeck , and he also bought the Limbsee family estate in Hindenburg.

Military career

Beneckendorff came on February 6, 1788 as a Junker in the Dragoon Regiment "von Borstell" of the Prussian Army . There he became ensign on March 18, 1789 and second lieutenant on May 8, 1791 . During the campaign in Poland in 1794 he fought at the siege of Warsaw and the battle near Kapinocz. On July 14, 1801 he was promoted to prime lieutenant, on September 4, 1802 he was sent to Dresden for the Saxon military parade . On October 30, 1804 he was promoted to staff captain. During the Fourth Coalition War he fought after the battles near Halle, Waren and Lychen. After the surrender at Lübeck, he was made inactive. On February 8, 1808, he was given half pay and a re-employment in prospect. On June 29, 1808 he was promoted to major , but renounced his pay. On March 22, 1810, he received his resignation with permission to wear his old uniform. He then lived on the Limbsee estate.

In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation , Beneckendorff was appointed commander of the 5th East Prussian Landwehr Infantry Regiment on June 1, 1813 and promoted to lieutenant colonel on December 8, 1813 . On February 10, 1814, he became brigade commander of the cavalry of the IV Army Corps. During the war he fought in the siege of Danzig , for which Beneckendorff was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class, and in the blockade of Magdeburg . On May 22, 1815 he was then appointed commander of Thorn. In this capacity, he was promoted to colonel on May 31, 1815 and major general on March 30, 1820 with a patent from April 10, 1820 . On August 23, 1821, Beneckendorff received the Order of St. Vladimir IV Class, on August 26, 1825, the Service Cross and on September 27, 1834, the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus . On March 30, 1835 he was given the character of Lieutenant General. With an annual pension of 2250 thalers Beneckendorff was born on August 12, 1837 passed . A little later, on November 4, 1837, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. He died in Dresden on April 23, 1847 and was buried in the Kreuzkirche.

In his assessment from 1804 it says: "An officer with an impeccable conduit, who has also attended the military lectures in Berlin and is constantly trying to acquire more service knowledge".

Beneckendorff married on July 14, 1808 in Langenau Antonie von Polenz (1791–1872) from the house of Langenau. The couple had several children:
