Johann Ludwig Graf von Cobenzl (also: Johann Ludwig Joseph Graf Cobenzl ) (born November 21, 1753 in Brussels , † February 22, 1809 in Vienna ) was an Austrian statesman .

Life

Johann Ludwig was one of ten children of the Austrian minister Johann Karl Philipp Graf Cobenzl (1712-1770), from the ancient Carinthian noble family Cobenzl , and his first wife Maria Theresa, Countess von Palffy (1719-1771). In 1772 Johann Ludwig Cobenzl entered the Austrian civil service and worked under Governor Johann Anton Graf Pergen in the newly acquired Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria . In 1774 he was already ambassador to Copenhagen , 1777 to Berlin and 1779 to Saint Petersburg , where he worked as ambassador until 1797, from 1786 onwards, and was accepted into the familiar circle of Empress Catherine II . In September 1795 he concluded an alliance for Austria with Great Britain and Russia against France and negotiated with Napoléon Bonaparte in Udine in 1797 . On October 17, 1797, he signed the Peace of Campo Formio . Since he fell ill as a negotiator for the peace negotiations, his cousin Johann Philipp Graf Cobenzl, as Austrian Vice Chancellor , concluded the Treaty of Teschen in 1779 , which ended the War of the Bavarian Succession . Cobenzl then went to the Rastatt Congress and led the negotiations that led to the 1801 Peace Treaty of Lunéville , which ended the war of the second coalition .

Cobenzl has now been appointed Vice Chancellor and Minister for Foreign Affairs . In November he accompanied the court to Olomouc . He resigned from his offices in 1805 after the Peace of Pressburg .

He was a staunch advocate of the absolutist monarchy and bitter opponent of the French Revolution .

Cobenzl had been married to Maria Theresia Johanna, Countess de Monte l'Abbate , since 1774 , with whom he had several children, including Carl Ludwig Graf Cobenzl as a male descendant. His grave monument is in the grave grove of the Währinger Park .
