Johann Ludwig von Poll ( Russian Иван Лаврентьевич Поль Iwan Lavrentjewitsch Pol , * 1768 in Ösel ; † April 19, 1840 in the Kiev governorate ) was a German-Baltic nobleman and major general in the Imperial Russian Army , he is one of the "heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812 ”.

Military career

His military career began in February 1781 in the Preobrazhensk body guard regiment , in 1783 he switched to the Kexsholm guard regiment . Here he served as an ensign . He was promoted to lieutenant in the Kiev Grenadier Regiment in 1786 . He was then transferred to the Taurid Grenadier Regiment and became captain in 1790 . His next Verendung was from January 1794 Karabiniersregiment of Seversk . During his war missions he was first promoted to second major , in 1796 to major , 1799 to lieutenant colonel and in 1800 to colonel . His first command he took over in 1803 as a regimental commander of the Dragoons of Novorossiysk , which he led successfully. After the Tilsit Peace of 1807 he was promoted to major general commander of the Kargopol dragoon regiment . Three years later, his regiment was the second reserve cavalry corps assigned, which under the command of Prince Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly was. In 1812 he led the regiment, now subordinate to the 1st Army, into the battle of Borodino . He commanded the Kargopol Regiment until September 1, 1814 and was brigade commander . In January 1817 he was given command of the 4th Dragoon Division . On December 29, 1821, he was discharged from the Imperial Russian Army with full honors and spent the rest of his life in the Kiev province .

As an officer, Johann Ludwig von Poll was mainly a troop leader who was involved in several battles: Kościuszko Uprising in 1794, Battle of Chełm 1794, Third Coalition War 1805, Russian campaign in 1812 , Battle of Borodino in 1812, Battle of Vyazma in 1812, Battle of Krasnoye in 1812, Battle of Dresden in 1813, Battle of Bautzen in 1813 and Battle of Großgörschen in 1813, Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in 1813, Battle of Fère-Champenoise in 1814, Battle of Paris in 1814 and finally the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

Awards

His portrait was placed in the military gallery of the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg on the "Barclay-de-Toll-Wall", as he was one of the generals of the Patriotic War of 1812. Most of the portraits there were created by the English painter George Dawe . Johann Ludwig von Poll was decorated with the following orders and decorations : Red Eagle Order 2nd Class, Pour le Mérite , Order of Saint Vladimir 3rd and 2nd Class, Russian Order of Saint George 3rd Class and Russian Order of Saint Anna 1st Class .

Johann Ludwig von Poll was a scion of the ancient von Poll family , who had lived in Estonia , mainly on the island of Ösel, since the mid- 14th century . His father was Lorenz Wilhelm von Poll (1730–1783), Lord on Wexholm, he was married to Magdalena von Nolcken (1737–1827). Johann Ludwig married Solomeja Jakovlevna Doschitzkaya (1785 – after 1841), their descendants were:

  • Gustav Anton Jakob von Poll (* around 1805, † December 6, 1867 in Saint Petersburg) ∞ Pulcherija Rolla
