Johann Wilhelm Schöler (* around 1723 in Schemmerhausen ; † November 6, 1793 in Bad Ems ) was a German organ builder.

life and work

Johann Wilhelm Schöler learned the trade from Johann Heinrich Kleine from Freckhausen near Schemmerhausen. Nothing further is known about his wandering years. In Neuwied he later worked with the clock and organ maker Christian Kinzig.

On September 24, 1749, Schöler married Maria Christiana Friederica Werner (1732–1767) in Bad Ems. From this marriage there were seven children, of which only two daughters and the son Christian Ernst survived the parents. After the marriage, Schöler settled in Bad Ems, where he quickly achieved a great reputation.

Schöler built a total of 49 organs between 1748 and 1792. Shortly before his death in 1792, he was granted the privilege of building court organs. This gave him (together with his son) the privilege to build all new organs and to repair all existing organs in the Katzenelnbogen area and in the Eppstein estate . After his death, his son Christian Ernst Schöler (1756–1832) took over his organ workshop, which continued until 1836 in the third generation.
