church

Side altar by Guckh

The branch church of the parish of Piding is dedicated to St. John the Baptist . The location and atmosphere of the place have contributed to the fact that a pre-Christian place of worship is often suspected at the location of the church. Indeed, the coincidence of the pagan tradition of the summer solstice with the feast of the patron saint on June 24th speaks in favor of such an assumption. In addition, the remains of a sacrificial site from Roman times can still be seen in front of the church , where the Mithras cult was probably worshiped.

The walls of the nave are from the Romanesque period . In the Gothic period , a reconstruction took place in which the rib vault was drawn in. In 1736 the baroque tower replaced the original roof turret . The church has special art treasures inside, including Romanesque and Gothic frescoes as well as a side altar in the early Renaissance style (around 1525), which probably originates from the workshop of Gordian Guckh . The baroque high altar shows the apostles Peter and Paul on the side and the decapitation of John the Baptist in the middle. In the vestibule is the altar of St. Wolfgang from 1616.

Chapel of St. Maria, so-called Johanniskapelle ( )

In 2009 the roof, facade and tower of the church were renovated. The chapel of St. Maria , also known as St. John's Chapel, which belongs to the church, is located 350 meters south of the inn in the forest next to the road , at an altitude of 664 meters.

Inn

An inn was opened in 1870 in the courtyard of the Sanktjohannser , who used to be the sacristan at the church. On Sunday, September 30, 2012, the roof structure of the inn, which is estimated to be 1000 years old, burned down. The damage amounted to half a million euros.
