John Austrheim

John Austrheim (born October 10, 1912 in Sandane , Gloppen , Sogn og Fjordane ; † April 13, 1995 ) was a Norwegian economic manager and politician of the Senterpartiet (Sp), who, among other things, was a long-time member of the Storting and from 1967 to 1973 chairman of the Sp was.

Life

Professional activities and local politicians

Austrheim, the son of a farmer , also worked as a farmer after graduating from youth school in Nordfjord .

He began his political career in local politics as a member of the municipal council of his hometown Gloppen from 1945 to 1951. At the same time he was a member of the school council of Gloppen from 1947 to 1954 and its chairman from 1954 to 1956, before he was mayor of Gloppen from 1955 to 1962 . He was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nordfjord Adult Education Center between 1960 and 1981 . For several years he was also involved in the Inner Mission and was chairman of the Inner Mission of Nordfjord from 1949 to 1951 and 1955 to 1957 and a member of the main board of the Inner Mission Society of the Lutheran Church of Norway between 1956 and 1965 .

In the mid-1950s, he took over a number of positions at the food company Gartnerhallen : There he was chairman of the board of the Bergen branch from 1955 to 1970, a member of the main board between 1955 and 1969 and a member of the company's working committee from 1960 to 1969.

Storting MP, party leader and minister

After he was a deputy member of the Storting for the farmers' party ( Bondepartiet ), the predecessor of the Senterpartiet, from 1958 to 1961 , he was elected for the first time as a candidate for the SP in 1961 and represented the constituency of Sogn og Fjordane there until 1977 .

In 1966 he became vice-chairman of the main board of Den Norske Stats Husbank , a state housing development company, and held this office until 1982. In addition, between 1967 and 1977 he was a member of the State Council for Nature Conservation ( Statens naturvernråd ), which was responsible for the promotion and conservation of the national parks in Norway .

As the successor to the incumbent Prime Minister Per Borten , Austrheim became chairman of the Senterpartiet in 1967 and held this office for six years until he was replaced by Dagfinn Vårvik in 1973.

During his membership in parliament he was briefly vice-president of the Odelsting , the former first chamber of the Storting, between November and December 1970 .

During his long membership in parliament he was a member of the Storting committees for social affairs ( Sosialkomité ), for communal matters ( Kommunalkomité ), for elections ( Valgkomité ), for foreign and constitutional matters ( Utenriks- og konstitusjonskomité ) and for industry ( Industrikomité ). He was also part of the delegation to the Nordic Council and to the General Assembly of the United Nations .

On October 1, 1969, Austrheim, as the successor to Lars Leiro, also became chairman of the Senterpartiet parliamentary group in Storting and held this office until he was replaced by the previous Prime Minister, Borten, on March 17, 1971.

On October 18, 1972, Prime Minister Lars Korvald appointed him to succeed Reiulf Steen as Minister of Transport in his government . Austrheim belonged to this minority government formed by Senterpartiet, Kristelig Folkeparti and Venstre until the end of Korvald's tenure on October 16, 1973.
