Jonesboro is a city in Craighead County in Arkansas , United States , with 74,889 inhabitants (as of 2016). It has been one of two county seats in that county since 1859 . The urban area has a size of 207.2 km².
The city is also known as the “City of Churches” because there are 75 different church buildings in the city. Jonesboro is also home to Arkansas State University , the second largest of its kind in the state.
history
Jonesboro was elected the district capital in 1859 and named after the State Senator William A. Jones . The place received a railway connection in 1881, when the Cotton Belt Railroad laid its tracks north of Jonesboro. In 1860 the population was already 1160 and in 1903 the first telephone line was installed. In 1906 a sewer system was set up in Jonesboro. Rice cultivation began around 1910. The electrification came in 1912 and the village streets were lit by electric lamps.
The First Baptist Church and the First Methodist Church were the first two churches to be built here between 1911 and 1916.
On March 24, 1998, the rampage at Westside Middle School took place near the city .
