José Enrique Gutiérrez Cataluña (born June 18, 1974 in Valencia ) is a former Spanish cyclist .
Career
Gutiérrez was able to attract attention as a U-23 driver especially in 1997, when he surprisingly beat all Spanish professionals in the national elite championships in the individual time trial and secured the title ahead of Joseba Beloki . Then he received his first contract as a professional racing driver in 1998 with the Spanish cycling team Kelme-Costa Blanca . In his first season he competed in the Giro d'Italia , which he had to leave after the 18th stage. At the UCI Road World Championships in 1999 in Treviso , he was world champion in the U-23 class in the individual time trial with just 1.5 seconds ahead of Michael Rogers .
In 2000 he competed in his second Giro d'Italia , in which he was able to take over the Maglia Rosa of the overall leader, but had to give up the race on the 18th stage.
In September 2004 he celebrated one of the greatest successes of his career on the Puerto de Navacerrada by winning the penultimate stage of the Vuelta a España , where he reached the summit as a soloist.
At the Giro d'Italia 2006 and finished third in Seraing's prologue behind Paolo Savoldelli and Bradley McGee . After the race returned to Italy, he was also one of the best drivers in the more difficult sections that followed, he finished fourth on the seventh stage, the mountain finish on Passo Lanciano the following day in third and thus took second place in the overall standings behind Ivan Basso . Surprisingly, Gutiérrez was able to defend this position until the end of the race and ultimately only had to admit defeat to the superior Basso.

After the Rock Racing team did not get a new license from the Union Cycliste Internationale in 2010, Gutiérrez announced his retirement from active cycling in March 2010, but started in 2011 and 2012 for the Colombian formation Gobernación de Antioquia . In his first year in South America he won the team time trial at the Vuelta a Colombia with his team. He celebrated a personal stage win at the Vuelta a Santander .
