Joseph Ferdinand Guidobald von Spaur (also Joseph Ferdinand Guidobald Reichsgraf von Spaur and Valör ) (born October 21, 1705 in Innsbruck ; † March 26, 1793 in Salzburg ) was a Catholic prelate and court bishop at the Palatinate-Bavarian electoral court in Munich .

Live and act

He came from the old Tyrolean nobility and was the son of Guidobald Franz von Spaur and his wife Helena Margaritha Countess von Wolkenstein-Trostburg . His sister Marie Adelheid Fortunata von Spaur (1693–1781) had an illegitimate son with Prince Ferdinand Maria Innozenz of Bavaria . It was Count Joseph Ferdinand Maria von Salern (1718–1805) who founded his own Wittelsbach branch.

Joseph Ferdinand Guidobald von Spaur became a Catholic priest. From 1740 to 1767 he officiated as pastor of the parish in Höslwang , which belongs to the Archdiocese of Salzburg , where he had the parish church of St. Nicholas decorated in a very high quality baroque style. From 1772 Spaur acted as provost of the Munich Liebfrauenstift , from 1780–87 also provost of the Altötting collegiate monastery .

In 1749 the Count was accepted into the Bavarian Knightly Order of St. George , in 1761 he became commander and clerical dean of the order, in 1774 holder of the Grand Cross and an inful religious provost, after which he was allowed to appear in honor of the bishop's miter on solemn occasions . Connected with this was the provost office of the collegiate monastery St. Wolfgang am Burgholz . On April 24, 1780 he was promoted to titular bishop of Abila in Palestine . Ludwig Joseph von Welden , Prince-Bishop of Freising , donated him his episcopal ordination on June 6th of that year in the Theatine Church in Munich .

From 1783 Joseph Ferdinand Guidobald von Spaur acted as Real Privy Councilor and President of the Electoral Spiritual Council in Munich . At the request of the Palatinate-Bavarian Elector Karl Theodor , Pope Pius VI. , on December 15, 1789, for this an exemtes court diocese, which was directly subordinate to the Holy See. It only included the court chapel or court parish, which, however, was responsible for all court servants in addition to the princely family, as well as for the official court churches .

Joseph Ferdinand Guidobald von Spaur was appointed as the first bishop of this court diocese and thus the highest Munich court clergyman. In the event of war, he automatically assumed the office of Bavarian field bishop . He was succeeded as provost of the Order of St. George by Count Damian Hugo Philipp von Lehrbach (1738–1815).

Spaur had not aspired to become a bishop and, because of his increasing frailty, asked several times for release from office. In 1791 he received the Theatiner Kajetan von Reisach (1735-1805) as coadjutor , who also succeeded him as court bishop when he died in 1793. After his death, Elector Maximilian IV. Joseph had the court bishopric abolished on July 22, 1805. It never came back to life.
