Joseph Maximilian Dreyer was in 1789 in Konstanz, the son of a government council born. From 1807 to 1809 he studied law at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and passed the first state examination in 1810 and the second in 1819 . From 1828 Dreyer was employed by the Tauberbischofsheim district office , where he was the head of the office, comparable to today's district administrator . He held this post until he moved to the Mosbach district office in 1830. Dreyer also worked in Mosbach from 1830 as an official director and from 1831 as a senior bailiff . In 1834 Dreyer moved to the district office of Waldshut and in 1846 to the district office of Blumenfeld , where he worked as an official director.

On May 21, 1849 Dreyer was appointed by the Baden Revolutionary Government as provisional director of the lake district . After the military suppression of the Baden Revolution by federal troops under Prussian leadership, Dreyer was dismissed from civil service on November 3, 1849 "for participating in high treason".

Relocation and the last years of self-employment

From 1852 Dreyer lived in Radolfzell on Lake Constance and moved to Überlingen in 1855 , where he set up a business bureau , among other things for the collection of outstanding debts.
