Josh Lawrence

Josh Lawrence (born July 8, 1982 in Princeton ) is an American jazz musician ( trumpet , composition ) of the Modern Creative .

Live and act

Lawrence, who is from New Jersey , started playing the trumpet at the age of ten but didn't take lessons until high school. There he was tutored by Anthony Biancosino , whose music program immortalized the film Whiplash by his classmate Damien Chazelle . In 2000, Lawrence received a scholarship from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia . There he studied with John Swana , Charles Fambrough , Trudy Pitts and Jimmy Bruno . He came into contact with the Philadelphia neo-soul scene and worked on recordings for Erykah Badu ( New Amerykah Part 1 ), the Boyz II Men ( Throwback ), Jazzyfatnastees and Jazmine Sullivan . He also formed his first band, The Monday Quintet, with vibraphonist Behn Gillece.

After graduating, he moved to New York. There Lawrence released his debut trio album Roots (2009). He toured Europe with the trio; he also worked with Polish, German and Norwegian artists on performances, recordings, plays and films. In 2010, Lawrence went back to Philadelphia, where he worked at the art school and joined Orrin Evans ' Captain Black Big Band . He has also worked with Bobby Zankel's Warriors of the Wonderful Sound , Anthony Tidds PACT, Matt Davis ' Aerial Photograph, Terell Stafford's Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia and singer Laurin Talese . In the following years he released his second trio album, One Night in Atlanta , set the documentary Love & Terror by filmmaker Dave Jannetta to music and composed The Harlem Suite , a five-movement work for the Captain Black Big Band , which was a tribute to Thomas Hart Benton at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York premiered. He also worked with Caleb Curtis , the George Gee Swing Orchestra, Francois Zayas and Venissa Santi. With Jason Fraticelli and Anwar Marshall, he leads the Fresh Cut Orchestra , with which two albums were created.

Further recordings were made in September 2017 with Tom Tallitsch ( Wheelhouse , Posi-Tone); shortly thereafter also his album Contrast (Posi-Tone), with David Gibson (trombone), Caleb Curtis (alto saxophone), Zaccal Curtis (piano), Orrin Evans (piano), Luques Curtis (bass) and Anwar Marshall (drums). He also played with Rudresh Mahanthappa , Jaleel Shaw , Don Byron , René McLean and Román Filiú . He currently (2019) leads a quartet with Luke Carlos O'Reiley , Caleb Wheeler Curtis, Mark Whitfield Jr and Noah Garabedian .

Lawrence teaches at the University of the Arts , Drexel University, and the Kimmel Center's Creative Music Program.
