Cardinal Jozef-Ernest van Roey (born January 13, 1874 in Vorselaar , Belgium ; † August 6, 1961 in Mechlin ) was Archbishop of Mechlin .

Life

Jozef-Ernest van Roey received his philosophical and theological training in the seminary in Mechelen and at the Catholic University of Leuven . He received on 18 September 1897, the sacrament of the priesthood and worked after completing further studies 1901-1905 as a lecturer at the Collège Américain in Leuven, the seminary for European education, especially Belgian priest for the mission in North America. From 1905 to 1907 he taught at the University of Leuven. In 1907 he was appointed Honorary Canon of Mechelen and appointed Vicar General .

On March 12, 1926 Jozef-Ernest van Roey was from Pope Pius XI. appointed Archbishop of Mechelen. He was ordained bishop on April 25, 1926 by the Apostolic Nuncio in Belgium, Archbishop Clemente Micara , co-consecrators were the Bishop of Bruges , Gustave-Joseph Waffelaert , and the Bishop of Tournai , Gastone Antonio Rasneur . His motto was In nomine Domini .

Pope Pius XI appointed him on September 12, 1929 first grand prior and governor of the Belgian Lieutenancy of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, founded in 1926 and based at the Notre-Dame du Sablon / Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ten Zavel cathedral in Brussels.

Already on June 20, 1927 Pope Pius XI took it. as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli in the college of cardinals . In both 1939 and 1958 , Jozef-Ernest van Roey took part in the conclave . In 1953 he initiated the establishment of the Collegium Pro America Latina Leuven (COPAL) at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven .

Jozef-Ernest van Roey was buried in the Mechlin Cathedral.
