Julia Dorny (born February 20, 1990 in Berlin , GDR ) is a German athlete , media scientist , journalist and TV presenter . As the only female athlete in the world, she is also successful as a judoka , mixed martial arts fighter and sumo wrestler. She is currently fighting at the German organizer German Mixed Martial Arts Championship (GMC). She became the first German woman to become MMA European champion and MMA world champion in featherweight among the amateurs of the IMMAF . So far, she is unbeaten in her professional career.

Athletic career

At the age of 7, Dorny became enthusiastic about judo. She has been fighting in the German Judo League since she was 14. At 17 she fought for the first time in the 1st Judo Bundesliga ( PSV Rostock ). At the age of 18 she received her black belt in judo. Dorny is multiple Berlin judo champion. She was German vice-champion in the individual ranking, multiple national ranking tournament winner and has achieved international success. In 2005 she qualified for the European Judo Championship , but could not compete due to an injury. She was a cadre athlete at the Olympic training center in Berlin as well as in the German Judo Association (DJB) and a student at the Werner-Seelenbinder Sports School, today's School and Competitive Sports Center Berlin (SLZB). With her first division club JC Wiesbaden she won bronze at the team championships. She is currently under contract for the first division club JC 71 Düsseldorf .

Sumo career
In 2016 she started sumo and in the same year became German champion, won bronze at the European championship and took 5th place at the world championship. In 2017 she received the Shodan (1st Dan) in sumo wrestling. In her sumo career, Dorny was multiple German champion (individual and open class), secured 5th place at the
2017 World Games and won silver at the US Open in Los Angeles in 2019 .

MMA career

Julia Dorny made her MMA debut as an amateur at the German Championships (German Mixed Martial Arts Federation) 2015, which she also won. In the same year she was nominated for the IMMAF World Championship in Las Vegas - where she made her international debut with bronze . She then immediately demonstrated the stability of her performance with another bronze medal at the IMMAF European Championship in Birmingham . In the following years she took part in the IMMAF Europe (2016 Vice European Champion) and IMMAF World Championships (2016 Vice World Champion, 2017 bronze), until she became European and World Champion in 2018. This made her the first German female European champion and first German female world champion in featherweight.

German Mixed Martial Arts Championship (GMC)
After achieving the European and World Championship titles, Julia Dorny made her professional debut in front of a home crowd on June 29, 2019 at GMC20 in Berlin against Miriam Santana Ramos, who she won in the first round through TKO ( ground and pound ) defeated. This fight was also the first GMC women's fight to be broadcast on FreeTV . She had her second fight at GMC22 on October 12, 2019 against Mariam Tatunashvili, which she also won through TKO (ground and pound) in the 2nd round.

Scientific and journalistic activity

In addition to her sporting career, Julia Dorny works as a media scientist, journalist and on-air reporter and presenter , including for Deutsche Welle TV . She is especially active and responsible for the REV format . She received a bachelor's degree in journalism and corporate communications in 2013 . In 2017 she defended her master's degree in media studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin on the subject of “Framing in Journalism”.

Since January 2020 Julia has her own podcast " WOMEN HIT HARDER - The Female Power Podcast by MMA World Champion Julia Dorny" and publishes new episodes at regular intervals. Her previous guests include actor Jürgen Vogel , boxer Axel Schulz , boxing world champion Regina Halmich and editor-in-chief Inga Griese .

In April 2020 she was appointed to the " Athletes' Commission " of the IMMAF.
