Julius August von Schwartz (born April 4, 1811 in Düsseldorf , † November 23, 1883 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and most recently inspector of the 2nd artillery inspection. In 1871 he was ennobled .

Life

His parents were the customs inspector Jakob Simon Franz Schwartz and his wife Therese Zensen.

Career

He attended high schools in Bonn and Cologne . After graduating, he joined the 7th Artillery Brigade on June 26, 1826 as a gunner . From 1828 to 1830 he was posted to the United Artillery and Engineering School , where he was appointed portepeef ensign on September 17, 1829 . After his return he was promoted to second lieutenant on June 26, 1831 . From 1842 he was department commander, in 1843 he came back as an adjutant in the 7th Artillery Brigade. Appointed Premier-Lieutenant on February 27, 1844 , he was transferred to the General Staff of the VII Army Corps on April 26, 1848 . On January 6, 1849, he was appointed captain in the General Staff and on March 22, 1849 he was assigned to Lieutenant General von Prittwitz in Schleswig-Holstein . During the first Schleswig War he fought at Düppel, Alminde and Viuf. In the same year he also took part in the prostration campaign in Baden .

On November 2, 1850, he was posted to Lieutenant General Graf von der Groeben in Kurhessen , and on December 7, 1850 to the staff of the Prince of Prussia . But on January 25, 1851, he returned to the General Staff and was transferred to the General War School as a teacher . There he was promoted to major on June 18, 1853 and transferred to the General Staff of the VII Army Corps on May 18, 1855. From there he came on July 2, 1857 as a department commander in the 8th Artillery Regiment and was commander of the 4th Artillery Regiment on May 18, 1858 , on May 22, 1858 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel there.

He was on January 17, 1860 with the Red Eagle Order III. Excellent with a bow. On June 1, 1860, he was appointed colonel and at the same time brigadier of the 4th Artillery Brigade. On April 7, 1863 he received the Turkish Mecidiye Order 3rd Class. On June 25, 1865, he was promoted to major general and appointed commander of the 4th Artillery Brigade.

During the German War he was appointed commander of the reserve artillery of the 1st Army on May 16, 1866 and fought near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz .

After the war, on September 20, 1866, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords. On October 2, 1866, he came to the 2nd Artillery Inspection as an inspector and was appointed a member of the General Artillery Committee. On November 10, 1866, he was also President of the Examination Commission for Premier Lieutenants of the Artillery.

He became lieutenant general on December 31, 1866 with a patent on October 30, 1866. On June 25, 1867, he received the Russian Order of St. Anne, 1st class. From July 22, 1868 to January 1, 1869 he was still a member of the Competence Court and on June 29, 1869 he was delegated to inspect the artillery and the pioneers of the Royal Saxon Army Corps. Then on September 11, 1869 he received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle.

During the mobilization for the Franco-Prussian War , he was appointed commander of the artillery of the 1st Army on July 18, 1870 . During the war he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class in the Battle of Vionville . He also fought at Gravelotte , Amiens , St. Quentin and the Hallue . During this time, on September 27, 1870, he became the commander of the artillery under Prince Friedrich Karl , commander in chief of the siege troops off Metz . From there he came back to the 1st Army on October 27, 1870, and later to the Northern Army. On December 2, 1870, he received the Iron Cross 1st Class for Amiens .

After the war, on June 6, 1871, he joined the 2nd Artillery Inspection as an inspector and was again a member of the General Artillery Committee. He was accepted into the Prussian aristocracy on June 16, 1871 and put up for retirement on August 2, 1871 , in addition he received the Order of the Red Eagle 1st class with oak leaves and swords on the ring. He died in Wiesbaden on November 23, 1883.

He married Jenny Marie Anna Sophie Margarethe Straeter on April 12, 1836 in Münster (born January 31, 1814 - † May 28, 1872). The couple had several children:
