Karl Ludwig Wilhelm Ernst von Prittwitz (born October 16, 1790 at Gut Karisch, Strehlen district , † June 8, 1871 in Görlitz ) was a Prussian infantry general and Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John . He played a role in the Berlin barricade uprising of 1848.

He should not be confused with Carl Baron von Prittwitz (1797–1881), Imperial Russian cavalry general and adjutant general of the tsar .

Life

origin

Karl came from the old, widely branched Silesian noble family von Prittwitz and was the son of the Prussian district administrator and landowner Karl Julius Wilhelm von Prittwitz (1758–1835), landlord in Karisch, and his wife Wilhelmine Ernestine Luise, née von Voss (1769–1828) , a daughter of Major General Ludwig Ernst von Voss .

Military career

After traveling by stagecoach 15 days from his father's estate, Prittwitz joined the Prussian Army in Königsberg as a flag junior on March 5, 1803 at the age of twelve as a flag junior in the “von Zenge” infantry regiment . On December 31, 1804 he was promoted to ensign and, at the age of 16, took part in the battle of Auerstedt on October 14, 1806. An alleged wounding in this battle is explicitly dismissed as a rumor in the family history of 1870. Until reactivation in 1810, Prittwitz lived in his parents' house again.

Promoted to Second Lieutenant on February 21, 1810 , he joined the 1st East Prussian Infantry Regiment and was transferred to the 1st West Prussian Infantry Regiment on August 5, 1811 . On December 30, 1818 Prittwitz received his appointment as adjutant to Prince Wilhelm . From May 3, 1821 he was head of department in the General Staff , from April 6, 1822 wing adjutant of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. On June 1, 1828, he had been a lieutenant colonel since 1824 and was appointed commander of the 1st Guards Regiment on foot and was promoted to colonel on March 30, 1829 . A year later he was promoted to lieutenant general on March 30, 1844 .

During the March Revolution of 1848 in Berlin , Prittwitz succeeded General Pfuel in the high command of the troops on the afternoon of March 18 . In the subsequent barricade fighting, in which the military also used cannons with grape ammunition, over 200 civilians and nearly 50 soldiers were killed. Prittwitz did not agree to the withdrawal from the reconquered inner city, ordered by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV , but remained in command. The public saw the blame for the disaster primarily on Prince Wilhelm, who was subsequently dubbed the “grape prince ” .

In May Prittwitz took over the official business of the General Command of the Guard Corps . In the following year, on March 16, 1849, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Army in the Schleswig-Holstein War and took part in several battles (including at Düppel on April 13, 1849).

Friedrich Daniel Bassermann (1811–1855), then Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of the Interior, wrote to Prime Minister Heinrich von Gagern (1799–1880) on April 26, 1849 :

The King wrote a hand-held ticket to Prittwitz (probably concerning the crossing of the Jutian border, a note from the Prussian Minister of Foreign Affairs read out yesterday evening in the Council of Ministers recommends not to cross the border ) and asked him whether he, as a Prussian general, would not obey his orders . - He replied: With the permission of his Majesty, he had taken the oath of the central authority ( provisional central authority of the Frankfurt National Assembly ) and would therefore only obey it. "
