Saskia Jungnikl (* 1981 in Güssing , Burgenland ) is an Austrian author, columnist and journalist .

Life

Saskia Jungnikl grew up in Reinersdorf in southern Burgenland . After graduating from high school, she studied history and journalism in Vienna . Shortly before completing her studies, she moved to the Vienna University of Applied Sciences , where she completed her journalism studies at the Institute for Journalism & Media Management in 2008.

During her studies she worked as a freelance journalist on Austrian domestic politics. Until 2006 she wrote for the Viennese city newspaper "Falter" . From 2006 to 2009 she published articles on Austrian domestic politics for the monthly magazine "Datum" . In 2008 she moved to derStandard.at , and in 2010 she worked as an editor for domestic policy for the print sister company Der Standard . Her texts appear again and again on the Austria pages of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit .

Her autobiographical book Papa has shot himself was published in November 2014 , in which she writes about the suicide of her father, the musician and director Erhard Jungnikl. In it she works on how suicide has changed her life and that of her family. She devoted individual chapters to the medical and media side of the subject of suicide. However, the book goes beyond personal processing. According to Der Freitag , it reflects "the silent suffering" ... "of a generation of men who grew up in the post-war period and from whom certain norms, family images and professions were expected ...". The book was preceded by an article in the Standard that generated a great response. For the article she received the honorable recognition of the Claus-Gatterer-Preis for her "high risk taking and the great truthfulness with which she approached the taboo topic 'suicide" "and the Prelate Leopold-Ungar-Journalist-Prize. The German illustrated Stern , the Austrian daily newspaper Die Presse and the Vienna city newspaper Falter conducted interviews with Jungnikl about the book. The radio stations FM4 and hr1 - on the occasion of the ARD theme week tolerance - also conducted interviews with her on this topic. On November 21, 2014 she was a guest on the WDR talk show Kölner Treff as part of the ARD theme week Tolerance . The book was presented during the culture week on the Austrian television broadcaster ORF2 . Based on the book, a film documentation was created by Dagmar Knöpfel for 3sat in 2015 .

At the end of 2014 she left the Standard Group. Jungnikl lives in Vienna and Hamburg. For the magazine Datum she leads the discussion column "Auf Leben und Tod", interviewed for example Josef Hader , Renée Schroeder , Anna Weidenholzer , Heide Schmidt and Armin Wolf (journalist) .

In her second book A Journey into Life, or How I Learned to Overcome the Fear of Death , Jungnikl deals with death again. Similar to her debut, the approach is personal. In an interview with Die Presse, she describes the book as "a kind of confrontation therapy" that then developed into a "journey into life" for her.
