Jure Velepec (born June 10, 1965 in Ljubljana ) is a former Yugoslav or Slovenian biathlete . He took part in four Winter Olympics.
Jure Velepec is the brother of Uroš Velepec . He started for TVD Partizan Dol in Ljubljana. Since the first half of the 1980s he took part in international races in the biathlon world cup . He was able to reach the points several times. In Sarajevo he took part in his first Olympic Games in 1984 and was 48th of the individual and with Andrej Lanišek , Zoran Ćosić and Franjo Jakovac 17th of the relay race. At the 1986 Biathlon World Championships at Holmenkollen in Oslo , he was 38th of the individual. It was followed in 1988 in Calgary , where Velepec last competed for Yugoslavia at the Olympic Games. In the individual he was 35th, in the sprint 53rd Since he was the only starter in the biathlon of Yugoslavia at these games, he did not take part in the relay race. The next international championship was the Biathlon World Championships in 1989 in Feistritz an der Drau , where Velepec was 20th in the individual and 57th in the sprint. Biathlon World Championships in 1990 followed at the World Championships in Minsk . In the individual, he came in 45th place, was 40th in the sprint, with Boštjan Lekan , Aleksander Grajf and Roman Klinc as final runners in the relay race eighth and with the same tenth in the team race. The 1991 Biathlon World Championships in Lahti were the last at which he competed for Yugoslavia. The first high point at which he started for Slovenia was the Olympic Games in Albertville . Velepec took 56th place in the individual and was with his brother, Grajf and Janez Ožbolt in the relay race 20. The last world championships were the title fights in 1993 in Borowetz . In Bulgaria the Slovenian was 76th in the sprint and 13th in the relay race in the Olympic line-up. The last tournament and career graduation was the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer . In Norway Velepec came in 38th place in the individual and was tenth in the relay race with his brother, Boštjan Lekan and Janez Ožbolt.
Velepec now serves in the rank of Colonel General in the Slovenian Armed Forces and, as President of the Ski Sports Committee, was jointly responsible for the organization of the 2012 Military World Ski Championships in Slovenia.
