Jutta Schmitz

Jutta Schmitz (* 1957 in Cologne ) is a German diplomat . She was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Lithuania from 2014 to 2017 until she became the head of the Foreign Office's liaison office to the UN campus in Bonn .

Life

Jutta Schmitz studied Sinology , History and Political Science at the University of Cologne . She completed her studies in 1983 with a master's degree . From 1989 to 1990 she attended the Foreign Service Academy in Bonn .

Diplomatic career

From 1990 to 1991 she was a consultant in the foreign affairs department of the Federal President's Office in Bonn, and from 1991 to 1993 consultant for cultural affairs at the German embassy in Beijing . From 1993 to 1997 she was a consultant for economic and humanitarian affairs at the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in New York . At the Foreign Office in Bonn, she was then Deputy Head of the United Nations Department for Finance and Human Resources until 2000. As an embassy counselor , she was the German representative in the NATO Political Affairs Committee in Brussels from 2000 to 2002 . From 2002 to 2006, Jutta Schmitz was deputy head of the human rights department at the Foreign Office in Berlin .

In 2006 she was appointed consul general in the German consulate general in Chengdu as the successor to Thomas Norbert Gerberich . Back in Berlin, she headed the Western Balkans Department at the Federal Foreign Office from 2008. Her next assignment abroad took her from 2009 to 2012 as envoy counselor to the German embassy in Beijing, where she was in charge of the political department. From 2012 to 2014, she was envoy in the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva .

As the successor to Matthias Mülmenstädt , Jutta Schmitz was appointed German ambassador in Vilnius in 2014. President Dalia Grybauskaitė was sworn in on September 8, 2014. In 2017, Jutta Schmitz was replaced by Angelika Viets as ambassador to Lithuania . Since 2017, she has been the head of the Federal Foreign Office's liaison office for the United Nations institutions in Bonn and all other international organizations in Germany.
