殺人 考察 (前) …… and nothing heart. (literally: "Considerations of a murderer (Part 1)")
Period: 1995 to January 1996
German Film Title: Suspicion of murder (Part 1)

The student Mikiya Kokutō ( 黒 桐 幹 也 , Kokutō Mikiya ) meets the strange Shiki Ryōgi ( Ry 儀 式 , Ryōgi Shiki ) standing in the snow and wearing only a kimono . During his school enrollment, Mikiya meets her again. She does not find a connection, but the talkative and friendly Mikiya manages to build a friendly relationship with the girl, who comes from the sex of the Ryogi . This family has been trying for generations to create someone who surpasses all other people. In this way, not only were the children driven to learn different types of martial arts, but also to develop a split personality. This should serve the purpose of specializing different individuals in different things. She was therefore given two names, Shiki ( ) and Shiki ( ). One ( ) describes the destructive masculine side, while the other ( ) describes the constructive feminine behavior. Depending on their personality, their behavior and way of thinking change completely. She is aware of this situation and is in control of her feminine side.

So initially the feminine side has control over Shiki, but she is convinced that she has committed serial murders . One day after Mikiya finds her covered in blood, he wants to find out the truth. So he sneaks into the family estate, he doesn't believe that she is a murderer, but he is noticed by her. So he reveals to Shiki that he trusts her, but she is overwhelmed and one evening holds a knife to his throat.

Chapter 4 - Garan no Dō: garan-no-dou.

伽藍 の 洞 garan-no-dou. (literally: "Cave of the Cathedral", analogously: "The Void")
Period: June 1998
German film title: The empty temple

Before she can kill Mikiya, Shiki, emotionally weakened, is made to throw herself in front of a car by the magician Sōren Araya ( 荒 耶 宗 蓮 ). Driven by the goal of using Shiki's body to reach the root of all things, for which the magicians search in vain, he conducts various experiments on Shiki and the people of the city.

Cared for by Mikiya, Shiki has been in a coma for two years. When she woke up in the hospital in June 1998, she saw the world superimposed with the “interfaces” (a) of death. Overwhelmed by this horrific sight, she tries to gouge out her eyes. Classified as mentally unstable, the doctors forbid Mikiya from visiting Shiki, who has just woken up and is lying aimlessly in bed. While she was still in a coma, Mikiya graduated from school and began to work for the magician Tōko Aozaki ( 蒼 崎 橙子 ). She pretends to be a psychiatrist and can therefore continue to look after Shiki in Mikiya's name. But Tōko also has a lot more in mind, since she sees a use for Shiki. So she explains to Shiki, who can no longer see because of the eye bandage, that her masculine and dangerous side died after the accident and that with this death she also lost all memories that only this part of her who was mostly active in had. So she can no longer remember "the boy with an ideal personality whom she wanted to protect".

Because of the emptiness in their bodies, the spirits of the deceased try to take hold of their shell at night. Tōko places a magical rune on the door with wise foresight and explains these strange perceptions to her as the special gift of being able to foresee death. One of the deceased still manages to overcome the rune. This spirit in a lifeless body tries to strangle Shiki in her bed, and Shiki hardly offers any resistance. Shortly before her possible death, based on Tōko's previous words, she comes to the conclusion that she does not want to leave Shiki Ryogi's body to a stranger. In the fight between the two, she finally jumps out of the hospital window together with her attacker. In the back yard she meets Tōko, who had not foreseen such attacks but their intensity. Her magic is not enough to stop the mind, but a beginning of a new self is awakening in Shiki. She now opposes her pursuer, but is not up to him and breaks her fingers when she hits her. Being able to move away briefly from the attacker, she throws Tōko a knife, which, together with her perception of the vulnerable areas, proves to be an effective weapon. Nevertheless, at the last moment, the spirit manages to take refuge in its empty body. Unsteady and full of anger, Shiki stabs himself in the chest with the knife in order to kill the troublemaker who lives in her.

After the fight ends, Tōko offers her a deal. Shiki is supposed to work for Tōko business and she explains how to deal with her acquired skills. Shiki then collapses exhausted and wakes up in the hospital with Mikiya at her side.

(a)The term "interfaces" is to be taken literally here, as it perceives people in a fragmented - cut up - form, which later turns out to be the points of attack of Shiki's victims.

Chapter 3 - Tsūkaku Zanryū: ever cry, never life.

痛 覚 残留 ever cry, never life.
Period: July 1998
German film title: Remaining sense of pain

The schoolgirl Fujino Asagami ( 浅 上 藤 乃 ) is sexually abused by several young people every week in an underground and run-down pub. She seems to be the perfect victim as she is very beautiful and cannot feel pain. One day she uses the abilities dormant in her and kills them all except for Keita Minato ( 湊 啓太 ), one of the rapists who escapes.

Fujino is seen by Mikiya sitting in the rain on the street and since Mikiya cannot leave a girl sitting in the rain, he offers her to spend the night with him. Fujino, who is still wearing her school uniform, follows him gratefully. The next morning at breakfast the dead boys are reported and it is explained that they deserve to die. Fujino becomes hysterical and screams that nobody deserves to die, and then leaves the apartment.

Meanwhile, Mikiya is in a financial crisis because Tōko has spent all of her money on magical items. So he asks his old school friend Gakuto ( 学 人 ) for help. In return, Mikiya is looking for the missing school starter Keita. Tōko gives Shiki the task of catching the murderer and killing him if necessary. She should also excuse Mikiya to his sister, because he cannot come to a meeting. Together with Mikiya's sister Azaka Kokuto ( 黒 桐 鮮花 ) Shiki meets their naive-looking friend Fujino . Fujino originally wanted to meet Mikiya to ask him to track down Keita as well.

Fujino is now looking for Keita herself by asking people around him. She meets a friend of Keita's who was also involved in the abuse, but who doesn't know anything about Keita. So that he does not betray her to Keita, she kills him. Shiki observes this action and suspects her, but lets Fujino's statement that she had no other choice dissuade her from further action. Meanwhile, Mikiya finds the panicked Keita, who is followed by Fujino's calls. When he tells Mikiya that Fujino tore the others apart just by looking at them, Mikiya takes him to Tōko, who explains that Fujino has a psychic ability that she acquired in the past.

When Fujino meets Shiki again, both fight and Shiki manages to avoid Fujino's eyes, but loses an arm and has to withdraw. It is revealed that the pain-insensitive Fujino kills people because she believes she has to feel the pain of others in order to feel human. Shiki is looking for someone like herself to feel like alive in a fight. Shiki, who no longer feels empty, attacks Fujino again and is able to arrest her after a long fight.

Meanwhile, Mikiya found out that Fujino's father was responsible for suppressing her emotions and pain so that her psychokinetic abilities were also suppressed. As the family of Ryōgi also have the children of the Asagami special skills that are suppressed but aware of their parents. In addition, Fujino suffered from an illness and did not have long to live. Her father is also the principal who asked Fujino's death so that she would not use her skills.

Mikiya now drives with Tōko to the place of the fight, but only arrives there when the fight has already been decided. Shiki succeeded Fujino, who was suffering from stomach cramps and could no longer fight, with a knife stab to kill the disease in Fujino's body. Fujino survives and Tōko offers Shiki to replace her arm. Shiki herself now believes that she has found her true destiny - to kill.

In the summer of 1998, a mysterious series of incidents caused a sensation in which schoolgirls fell from the Fujyō building for no apparent reason . Rumor has it that ghosts are circling the skyscraper. Although Shiki and Tōko don't think much of the case, Shiki enters the building after watching another fall and Mikiya falling into a deep sleep. Inside she meets the responsible spirit, the soul of Kirie Fujō ( 巫 条 霧 絵 ), from which she can just escape. She was forced to separate her prosthetic arm and returns to her apartment alone, while Tōko works on a better arm.

Convinced that the ghost is also responsible for Mikiya's deep sleep, she enters the high-rise again and climbs onto the roof. There she defeats all souls of the fallen girls and also the soul of Kirie in a combative conflict.

Meanwhile, Tōko is in the hospital where the sick Kirie is lying. She can't get out of bed and therefore wished she could fly. So she created a ghost who asked the girls on the roof to fly in a dream, so that some wanted to fly again after waking up and threw themselves off the roof. Since her second self was killed by Shiki, Kirie also plunges into the depths.

He stays with Shiki for several weeks because Mikiya is on a training trip. Tomoe notices that Shiki appears to be being followed, but she doesn't care. When Tomoe confesses his love to Shiki, she just asks if she can kill him, and he agrees.

After Tomoe leaves the house and Mikiya returns, Shiki and Mikiya's sister Azaka meet again. But even after asking again, Mikiya does not want to leave Shiki and Azaka leaves her again after studying the writings of the magician in order to become one herself. Meanwhile, Mikiya is investigating a house that is believed to have been murdered, but was only noticed as screams by the neighbors.

Shiki gets her new weapon, a 500 year old katana , delivered the next morning . Tōko advises against carrying this dangerous weapon in public, after which she leaves Shiki at home. Meanwhile, Mikiya and Tōko drive to the building in question, in which only one family lives normally. Meanwhile, Tomoe returns to Shiki's apartment and tells him that he saw his family whom he killed. When they arrive at the house, they discover that they are being shown an illusion that Tomoe's family is actually dead and that Sōren Araya, who had previously persecuted Fujino Asagami and Kirie Fujō, is responsible for everything. In a fight between the two, which Sōren wins, Shiki is sucked into a spiritual prison.

Mikiya finds a blond young man wearing a red cloak, Cornelius Arba ( コ ル ネ リ ウ ス ゠ ア ル バ ), who reports on Shiki's capture. When Tōko arrives, a fight begins in which Sōren appears and declares that he wants to find the root of all things. Since Shiki is already at the root, he wants to take over her body. All the events of the last few years are his work. The following fight ends with Tomoe and Soren's death. Two weeks later, Mikiya visits Shiki, but she rejects him.

Chapter 6 - Bōkyaku Rokuon: fairy tale.

忘却 録音 : fairy tale. (literally: "Forgotten sound recordings: fairy tales")
Period: January 1999
German film title: Lost memory

Azaka is asked by Tōko to investigate an incident at her school in which two girls attacked each other with knives, while the teacher who was there seemed to forget everything immediately. Since strangers are not allowed to enter the premises of the renowned private school, Azaka does the research. Although she still holds a grudge against Shiki, she asks her to help track down fairies because she can see them. At school they meet their class teacher Satsuki Kurogiri ( 玄 霧 皐 月 ) and shortly afterwards Misaya Ōji ( 黄 路 美 沙 夜 ).

The next day, Azaka learns from school documents that a class teacher disappeared after a fire in the school without quitting. When she visits the room of the fire, she meets Misaya. When she sees a fairy next to her who resembles the missing teacher, she is knocked down. Shiki, who is supposed to investigate the life of Kaori Tachibana ( 橘 佳 織 ), wakes her, but she has lost some memories. The investigation reveals that Kaori was sick and pregnant, the father was probably the missing teacher Hideo Hayama ( 叶 山 英雄 ). Mikiya soon reveals that Hideo used the girls to sell them. Further research reveals that the teacher Satsuki Kurogiri has long suffered from memories and that there have been deaths at every school he taught. Tōko recognizes in him one of those sought by the Association of Magicians, who has mastered the original language and hypnosis.

Meanwhile, Shiki, who was waiting for Azaka at school, faces Satsuki Kurogiri. He says that he does not command the fairies and wants to give back memories to people. When she attacks him anyway, he lets her go blind for a moment using the original language and gives her some of her memories against her will. When Azaka meets Satsuki, he reveals to her that he was responsible for Kaori's suicide, taught Misaya magic and collected people's memories in order to give them back. As a child, Satsuki himself was kidnapped by fairies, whom he later killed himself. However, he was rejected by his parents and lost his ability to perceive his own memories, so that he no longer knows whether his memories are real. For this reason, he used the original language to create a second image parallel to his normal thoughts, so that he can check whether his memories are true by comparing both parts. But he got Kaori to do what he wanted before. Misaya is now supposed to set fire to the school building and all of the students, assuming that Hideo is her brother.

But Azaka can prevent this by freeing Misaya from false memories with her fire magic. At the same time, Satsuki is stabbed to death by one of the students, but in the end he feels remorse. Shiki, who has now got some of her memories back, feels uncomfortable, also because she is going out with Mikiya for the first time.

Period: February 1999
German film title: Suspicion of murder (part 2)

Even though Shiki almost killed him two years ago, Mikiya still believes that she was not responsible for the murders of that time. The murderer who was up to mischief two years ago is back, however, and suicides occur more frequently when Shiki is once again out and about alone in the night. Meanwhile , Mikiya meets the real killer, Lio Shirazumi , a former senior student at Mikiya's school. He has medium-length blonde hair and is wearing a red jacket with a black skirt. Due to the similarity of his clothes to he Shikis, she was also mistaken for the murderess. When Mikiya asks why he did it, Lio replies that an inner voice has asked him to do so since Soren had awakened his true nature in him. He declines the offer to be helped and runs away.

In her search for the murderer, Shiki finds a person whose death would be worthwhile. During a phone conversation with Mikiya, she also decides to kill Lio and then falls out with Mikiya. She tracks down his hiding place, where he grows and sells drugs himself, so that other people become just as crazy as he is. When Shiki hesitates because Mikiya is against the murder, she is captured by Lio. When Mikiya tries to free her, he is stabbed in the head by Lio and falls lifeless to the ground. Lio says that only a murderer can understand him, and a fight ensues between him and Shiki. She can beat him despite her desperation over Mikiya's death, but is just as badly injured. But soon after they are found by the police and can be treated in a hospital, Mikiya loses an eye. Finally, through this experience, they get even closer.

Epilogue - Kara no Kyōkai

空 の 境界
Period: March 1999

On a snowy day in March, Mikiya sees Shiki thoughtlessly standing on the street. Her third personality is directly linked to the origins of everything Sōren searched in vain for. She tells the drawn Mikiya the connections between the origin and the three personalities in Shiki. As she says, she now has the ability to restore his remaining injuries, his lost eye and his limping leg. He refuses because Shiki's abilities only bring destruction and he fears that it will be worse afterwards than before. In the end, Shiki's third personality says goodbye to him and disappears without a trace. She says that they will see each other again from the next day anyway. Mikiya then walks normally without a limping leg.

Conception

The fictional world in which the plot of Kara no Kyōkai takes place is the same as that used in the work Tsukihime created by Type-Moon . Since Kara no Kyōkai appeared before the publication of Tsukihime, the draft of the fictional world is ascribed to this publication. The two works have many parallels. The characters involved are very similar both in terms of character and skills. Even the names of the characters have strong similarities, so Shiki Ryōgi correlates with the main actor Shiki Tōno occurring in Tsukihime and Tōko Aozaki is the sister of Aoko Aozaki only mentioned in Tsukihime .

Many names and peculiarities are borrowed from Buddhism . The name Shiki ( ) roughly means "consciousness" and is considered in Buddhist teaching to be the last of the five groups of attachment or the third link of dependent origin; the way in which the consciousness of beings perceives the world through their senses and in the form of their own thinking and experiencing, conditioned by their respective karmic forms. Her second, equally pronounced, name is Shiki ( ) and refers to a solemn and graceful process, as well as to the constructive model of mathematics , which is intended to underline the character of this personality.

The scenario is deliberately designed so that the weather plays a special role. This is in direct relation to the currently active personality of Shiki. The third, hidden personality of Shiki is always active when it snows, while the violent personality penetrates rainy scenes. This concept was also retained in the film adaptation, so that the fight scenes in Fukan Fūkei take place under falling rain. The eye color of Shiki was also used as a stylistic device, so that they light up blue-red when they are angry, while they look gray, empty in their apartment.

The film adaptation contains numerous allusions to other works filmed by Type-Moon. So z. B. Shiki in the first film Fukan Fūkei exactly the same yellow raincoat as the character Saber from Fate / stay night wore in the third episode of the anime.

Light novel

Before the book series was published, five chapters were published online in October 1998. These were published free of charge on the Dōjinshi website of Kinoko Nasu and Takashi Takeuchi , who formed the Takebōki group . The final two chapters were offered on Comiket 56 in August 1999. Based on these initial successes, they founded the Type-Moon group, which specializes in visual novels . Kara no Kyōkai can therefore be seen as a cornerstone for the development and development of this company. In return, the publication of the first four chapters of the story on a CD for fans Tsukihime PLUS-DISC contributed to the fact that the story was offered again on Comiket 61 on December 30, 2001 by Kinoko Nasu in self-publishing due to the reactions of the fans.

When on August 6, 2004 the editor Kōdansha announced that the series would be released as a commercial publication, this enjoyed enormous popularity. A limited edition of 5,000 was sold out two hours after it went on sale, even though it was very expensive at 9,800 yen . Taken together, both editions of Kara no Kyōkai (the revised version by Kōdansha was offered in the form of two copies Kara no Kyōkai: Mae and Kara no Kyōkai: Ato ) sold more than 500,000 times.

Together with the publication of the film series, the novel was also reprinted at the end of 2007.

radio play

In September 2002 a radio play CD Kara no Kyōkai - the Garden of sinners was offered by Ongoing Anime , the content of which is based on the novel. Jōji Nakata, who has already played important roles in most of the previous works by Type-Moon, spoke the lyrics of Sōren Araya and was the only seiyū who also played the same role again in the film adaptation. Kinoko Nasu said that the Ufotable staff had also agreed and that there could be no better spokesperson for Araya.

Film series

The logo under which the film series is marketed, consisting of the Kanji for Kara no Kyōkai , the vertical Kanji for film and the English subtitle the Garden of sinners .

When asked why Kara no Kyōkai was implemented as a series of films and not as a television series, Kinoku Nasu replied that the story asked for it and that he had rejected all previous requests for an anime implementation due to concerns. He was firmly convinced that if the plot, which is written like a poem, had been implemented as an anime television series, the audience would not have understood it and thus disinterest would have arisen. However, when the proposal was made to convert the written work into a film, he almost agreed to it. In the back of his head he toyed with the idea that viewers in the cinema would follow his story with a completely different motivation than they would on television at home. Nevertheless, he imagined the implementation of such a complex plot as a single film very difficult and broke off the discussions about it. Already firmly convinced that there will probably never be an anime adaptation of Kara no Kyōkai, since the later works by Type-Moon such as Shingetsutan Tsukihime and Fate / stay night were animated before , Katsushi Ōta from Kōdansha made him another Offer. He asked Kinoku in a collaboration with Aniplex and Ufotable to publish the story as a seven-part film, whereupon the latter agreed.

Based on these negotiations, the film series, which is divided into eight chapters, is animated by Studio Ufotable. The music production and marketing, however, took over Aniplex. The Notes company, also mentioned in the film, is just another name for Type-Moon. The films were released in German on Anime Virtual's label Kazé on DVD including an audio CD.
