Karin Jöns (born April 29, 1953 in Kiel ) is a German politician ( SPD ). She was a member of the European Parliament from 1994 to 2009 . In the elections to the European Parliament on June 7, 2009 , Jöns was the 25th to miss out on the list proposed by the SPD, which only won 23 seats.

biography

education and profession

After graduating from high school in 1973 in Heidelberg , Jöns completed a teaching degree in political science , history and Slavic studies at the University of Mannheim , which she completed with a state examination (1977 in political science and history, 1980 in Slavic studies). From 1975 to 1977 Karin Jöns was a research assistant at the Chair of International Relations at the University of Mannheim and from 1976 to 1980 she was a freelance journalist for various daily newspapers, among others. a. Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung, Rheinpfalz and Mannheimer Morgen in Heidelberg, Ludwigshafen and Mannheim. From 1978 to 1980 she also worked as an editor for the main board of the ÖTV in Stuttgart .

In 1981 she moved to Bonn , where she worked as a press officer for the Senator for Federal Affairs of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen until 1982 . She then headed the office of the representative of the Federal Republic of Germany for Franco-German cultural relations in Bonn until 1986. Until 1987 she worked as a consultant for international and European affairs in the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia in Düsseldorf . She was then entrusted with setting up the representation of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen in Brussels .

Jöns has been a member of the SPD since 1973. From 1973 to 1977 she was a member of the Working Group of Young Socialists, Jusos , most recently deputy chairwoman in Mannheim . From 1979 to 1980 she was a member of the SPD district executive in Heidelberg . From 1998 to 2010 she was a member of the state executive committee of the SPD Bremen .

From 1994 to 2009 Jöns was a member of the European Parliament in the PES Group. She was a member of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee and chaired the European Parliamentary Group on breast cancer . Since 2007 she has also been deputy chairwoman of the SPD MEPs in the European Parliament and parliamentary manager.

From 2009 to 2011 Jöns was a member of the federal executive committee of the SPD.

In 2010 she ran for a ballot for state chairman of the SPD Bremen; while she lost to Andreas Bovenschulte .

  • Jöns has been a member of the Radio Bremen Broadcasting Council and the ARD Program Advisory Board since 2008 .
