Karl August von Backhof

Karl August von Backhof , also Backhoff (born November 19, 1720 in Prosigk ; † August 4, 1807 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and chief of the cuirassier regiment No. 2 . He was also chief steward of the Prussian princes Friedrich Wilhelm and Ludwig and director of the 2nd department of the Upper War College.

His parents were the Prussian major Johann August von Backhof and his wife Agnese Charlotte, née von Auert.

Military career

Backhof visited the cadet house in Berlin from December 25, 1734 and came to Crown Princess Elisabeth Christine as a page on May 31, 1735 . On June 1, 1740 he became a cornet in the body carbine regiment . He had the honor of being the first officer appointed by Frederick II . In the First Silesian War Backhof fought in the Battle of Mollwitz , in the Second Silesian War near Hohenfriedberg and Kesselsdorf . On June 8, 1745 he was promoted to lieutenant.

On July 22nd, 1755 he was sent to the Hussar Regiment "von Wartenberg" for training in hussar service . In 1756 Backhof became adjutant to General Peter von Pennavaire . In the Seven Years' War he fought at Lobositz , Kolin , Freiberg , Breslau , Leuthen , Zorndorf , Hochkirch and at the siege of Schweidnitz. At that time he was on January 24, 1757 staff assistant master and on July 24, 1757 Rittmeister and company commander . In 1759 Backhof was captured while foraging and could only be exchanged under Prince Heinrich in 1761. On June 9, 1761 he became major and on November 10, 1762 he received the order Pour le Mérite for the Battle of Freiberg.

In 1771 Backhof was sent to explore the Havel . A job he did to the king's satisfaction. On September 26, 1771, he was appointed regimental commander and on May 30, 1773 he rose to lieutenant colonel . As such, he took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession . On September 1, 1780 Backhof was promoted to colonel , and on July 17, 1781 he was canon in Minden. On November 1, 1781, the king gave him the post of chief steward of the eldest sons of Prince August Wilhelm: Friedrich Wilhelm and Ludwig. At the same time he remained regimental commander and received a pension of 1000 thalers. On March 16, 1783 he was promoted to chief of the cuirassier regiment "von Saher" and on May 21, 1783 to major general. On December 29, 1786 the new King Friedrich Wilhelm II ordered that Backhof should take care of his regiment and no longer the princes. On August 4, 1789, he was transferred to the Oberkriegskolleg as director of the 2nd Department. For this he received a salary of 3,000 thalers. On August 12, 1790 he was appointed lieutenant general. On November 4, 1796 he received his resignation with a pension of 2000 Talers and on November 19, 1797 he was also awarded the Red Eagle Order. He died on August 4, 1807 in Berlin and was buried in the Werderscher Kirchhof on.

Backhof married Sophie Eleonore Friederike von Erlach († December 1781), a sister of General Friedrich August von Erlach , in February 1763 . His second wife was Johanne Margarete Sophie Schwartz (* 1750 - 22 May 1804). The couple had the following children:

  • Charlotte Johann Friederike (born March 29, 1785), illegitimate, legitimized on October 7, 1807
  • Luise Wilhelmine Augusts (born September 25, 1786 - † September 21, 1789), out of wedlock
