Peter of Pennavaire

Peter von Pennavaire (born August 6, 1680 in Toulouse , † January 19, 1759 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general of the cavalry , commander of the body carbine regiment and heir to Heiligenthal .

Life

origin

His father was the parliamentary advocate in Toulouse Pierre de Pennavaire († 1729). After the edict of Fontainebleau , the father fled to Berlin with his four sons.

Career

He joined the Brandenburg Grand Mousquetiers and fought in the War of the Spanish Succession , such as the Battle of Malplaquet . In December 1712 he became a lieutenant in the bodyguard on horseback . He fought for Prussia in the Pomeranian campaign in 1715/1716 . On December 21, 1718 he was promoted to Rittmeister , in 1733 to Major , in 1741 to Lieutenant Colonel and in 1744 to Colonel . He also fought in the Silesian Wars . On July 14, 1748, he was appointed major general. In June 1747 he was awarded the Pour le Mérite . On November 14, 1751 he became chief of the K 11 Cuirassier Regiment , the Leibkarabiner Regiment. In February 1757 he was awarded the Order of the Black Eagle . In the Battle of Kolin on June 18, 1757, however, he made serious mistakes that contributed to the defeat. He was badly wounded during the Battle of Breslau on November 22, 1757 and later died of pneumonia in Berlin. He was buried in the garrison cemetery.

On July 6, 1748, he became Drost von Esens , with permission to sell the position. So he sold it on June 30, 1749 to Wilhelm Ferdinand Thilo zu Stechow (1735–1787), a son of Major General Christoph Ludwig von Stechow .

His name was immortalized for his work in 1851 on one of the plaques on the equestrian statue of Frederick the Great .

family

He was married to the Huguenot Margaretha Renée Rey from 1725. She also came from an Erlangen patrician and merchant family. The couple had four children. Two of the three sons died as officers in the Silesian wars. His daughter Renata Margarethe (* July 21, 1730 - February 2, 1795) married Colonel Stephan Gottlieb von Dewitz (* July 23, 1723 - 1787), a son of Lieutenant General Friedrich Wilhelm von Dewitz in 1747 .

His older brother, Colonel Johann Jakob von Pennavaire, died in Berlin in December 1750.
