Karl Ludwig Friedrich Becker (born December 18, 1820 in Berlin ; † December 20, 1900 there ) was a German history painter .

Life

Karl Becker was a student at the Berlin Academy from 1837 to 1840. He continued his training in August von Kloeber's studio . In 1841 he participated in the cardboard boxes for Schinkel's frescoes for the vestibule of the Altes Museum in Berlin and later in their execution under Peter von Cornelius . During his studies in Munich he took part in the painting of the Church of St. Boniface under Heinrich Maria von Hess . In 1842 he won a scholarship as a prize in academic competition, which enabled him to stay in Paris in 1843 and then in Rome from 1844 to 1847 . Returning to Berlin, he executed five paintings in the Niobidensaal of the Neues Museum . He reached the maturity of his portrayal in Venice, which he visited in 1853. His most important works were based on the model of Paolo Veronese and other Venetian masters. Two of his pictures belong to the collection of the Berlin National Gallery .

In 1860 he became a member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts , Section for the Fine Arts. From 1882 to 1895 he was president of the academy, then its honorary president until his death.

Karl Becker died in Berlin in 1900, just two days after his 80th birthday, and was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.
