Carl Friedrich August von Kloeber (born August 21, 1793 in Breslau , † December 31, 1864 in Berlin ) was a German painter .

Life

After his education at the Kadettenanstalt in Berlin in 1805/06, August von Kloeber first studied construction from 1808 at the building school in Breslau and from 1810 painting at the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. His artistic training was interrupted during the wars of liberation against the Napoleonic army in 1813, when he volunteered in the battles in Großgörschen , Bautzen and Paris. After the peace treaty in 1815, Kloeber initially stayed in Paris to study the art collections there and then went to the Vienna Art Academy for four years . During this time he went on an educational trip to France and England. In Vienna, Kloeber copied works by Old Masters , especially Antonio da Correggio and Peter Paul Rubens , and painted pictures with religious motifs and portraits, including of members of the Beethoven and Grillparzer families .

The Beethoven portrait was created in Döbling near Vienna in the summer of 1818 as a double portrait of the composer and his nephew and is described as extremely successful. It was commissioned by Kloeber's brother-in-law, Johann Freiherr Skrbenský von Hříště (1768–1822), for his palace in Schönhof . The castle was demolished in 1927, the portrait is lost; there is also no map. Kloeber's draft of Beethoven's head and hands have survived. In addition, the sketch of the head has been lithographed several times under Kloeber's supervision.

In 1818, at the instigation of Karl Friedrich Schinkel , Kloeber was appointed to Berlin, where around 1820 he was involved in the painting of the newly built theater . He also made designs for the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin (KPM) until 1836 . In addition to his own compositions, there were also works in collaboration with Gottfried Wilhelm Völcker . Supported by a grant from the Ministry of Culture, Kloeber stayed in Italy from 1821 to 1828, where he came into contact with Bonaventura Genelli , August Kopisch and August Wilhelm Ahlborn in Rome . After his return he became a member from 1829 to 1864 and a professor at the Berlin Art Academy in 1834, where he was head of the composition class from 1854, and in whose academy exhibitions he participated almost regularly. In January 1848 Kloeber received the Red Eagle Order IV class.

August von Kloeber painted pictures with motifs from mythology, religion, portraits and occasionally also themes from history. In addition to working in private villas, he received commissions from the Prussian royal family, especially from Friedrich Wilhelm IV , who used him to paint a number of castles and churches. In addition, he made designs for the Royal Porcelain Manufactory , goldsmith's work, medals, silk weaving and dealt with lava and glass painting .

Kloeber preferred motifs from mythology in his work, which made him one of the few exceptions among the German painters of the time. His work was shaped by the study of Correggio and Rubens , with influences from the art of Jacques-Louis David . “He likes graceful and delicate motifs best. His nymphs, graces and cupids appear lovely, if often a little sweet. [...] His talent for composing easily and fluently was only given the opportunity to develop freely when he was commissioned to decorate around 1860. The cycles created at that time (lively groups of figures; grace of the play of lines; naturalistic treatment of the individual forms) are, like many later works by Kloebers, impaired by a strongly academic trait. They are strongly characteristic of the "Neurococo" around the middle of the 19th century. "

August von Kloeber died in Berlin in 1864 at the age of 71 and was buried in the Luisenstadt cemetery . His grave has not been preserved.
