Karl Friedrich Heinrich von Massow (also: Wedig Karl Gottlob , born April 27, 1770 in Woblanse ; † October 11, 1851 ibid) was a Prussian major general .

His parents were the Prussian Rittmeister and Herr auf Woblanse, Karl August von Massow (1725–1778) and his wife Anna Dorothea Juliane, born von Massow († 1814), a daughter of the Prussian War Minister Valentin von Massow . In 1781 she married the Rittmeister Friedrich Wilhelm von Normann (1761–1788).

Military career

In 1785 Massow joined the infantry regiment "von Schönfeld" of the Prussian Army as a private corporal and was promoted to secondary lieutenant by mid-April 1790 . On April 10, 1791 he was transferred with a patent from July 7, 1788 to the infantry regiment "von Klingsporn" and took part in the campaign in Poland in 1794/95 . By mid-January 1801, Massow was promoted to captain and came to General Julius von Grawert as an adjutant of the Upper Silesian Infantry Inspection . On October 11, 1804 he was transferred to the infantry regiment "von Sanitz" as a major and on October 19, 1805 as company commander . On August 14, 1806 he came back as an adjutant to General von Grawert. In the Fourth Coalition War , Massow fought in the Battle of Jena , escaped to Magdeburg and after the fortress surrendered, he became a prisoner of war. On April 1, 1807, it was exchanged and transferred to the Silberberg fortress to help defend it.

After the Treaty of Tilsit Massow was on December 1, 1807 Deputy commander and on 18 February 1809 commander appointed the fortress. On August 4, 1810, he was transferred to the Silesian Infantry Regiment as commander. He protested against it, since Massow felt it was a resetting and received his position as fortress commander back on October 29, 1810. In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation , he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 22, 1813 , before being transferred to the 4th Silesian Landwehr Regiment on January 10, 1814 as commander. In 1814 he took part in the blockade of Metz . On June 5, 1815 he became a colonel and after Napoleon's return from Elba he fought in the Battle of Waterloo , for which he received the Iron Cross II. Class.

After the war, Massow was assigned to the salaried tribe of the 4th Silesian Landwehr Infantry Regiment on March 18, 1816. On March 12, 1820, he came to the 18th Landwehr Regiment as a commander. Finally he received his departure on June 30, 1821 with the character of major general and a pension of 800 thalers. On June 8, 1843 he received the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class. He died on October 11, 1851 on Woblanse.

In his assessment from 1799 it says: “According to the testimony of Lieutenant Colonel von Massenbach, an excellent officer, fully trained, gave evidence of his diligence and mathematical knowledge when he was accepted into Silesia and can be used to good effect in the field. Qualifies for the General Staff ”.

Marriage and offspring

Massow married Franziska Friederike Karoline von Favrat (1784–1868), the daughter of General Franz Andreas von Favrat, on November 16, 1802 in Glatz . The couple had several children, including Heinrich von Massow (1810–1896), who became a Prussian major general and married Davide von Witzleben (1824–1895), daughter of Minister Jobst von Witzleben .
