Carl Jöken

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Jöken (born November 3, 1893 in Krefeld , † April 7, 1971 in Hamburg ; also Karl Jöken ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Jöken began studying chemistry , which he had to interrupt from 1914 to 1918 due to his participation in the First World War as a soldier . After his discharge from the army, he gave up chemistry and trained as a tenor singer . He was trained by the Krefeld singing master Gustav Pielken , who worked as a voice trainer at the city conservatory for over 25 years.

In 1918 he made his debut at the Krefeld Stadttheater in the role of Manrico in Verdi's Troubadour . From 1920 to 1923 he was a hero tenor at the Stadttheater Freiburg i. Br. From 1923 he was the first lyric tenor at the Berlin State Opera . His inaugural roles were Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly and Eisenstein in the Fledermaus by Johann Strauss . In 1924 he took part in the premiere of Leoš Janáček's opera Jenůfa .

In 1925 he sang Turridu in Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana at the Volksbühne in Berlin. In 1927 he sang in the world premiere of Kurt Weill's Royal Palace under Erich Kleiber at the Berlin Kroll Opera. The following year, also under Kleiber's direction, he took over the singing role of the first lay brother in the world premiere of Franz Schreker's The Singing Devil . He remained a member of the ensemble of the State Opera until 1934.

Jöken not only sang serious roles, but also appeared as an operetta tenor; After he had performed successfully in Millöcker's Beggar Student and Kálmán's Violet from Montmartre at the Metropol Theater in Berlin in 1930 , he increasingly turned to operetta. Under the baton of Bruno Walter , he sang a performance of the bat in Amsterdam , which was repeated at the Covent Garden Opera in London. He had other international appearances at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, where he sang from 1931 to 1932, especially in the buffo category. In 1931 he also took part in the premiere of Igor Stravinsky's opera Oedipus Rex (Edipo Rey), which Ernest Ansermet conducted. Performances were on August 11th, 16th and 19th. Ludwig Hofmann and Alexander Kipnis were Jöken's partners on stage.

Since 1933 he had great successes in operettas at the Berlin Theater des Westens : In Eduard Künneke's Die enticing Flamme , which premiered on December 27, 1933, and in the same year in Walter Wilhelm Goetzes The King's Page . The following year he took part in the world premiere of Goetzes operetta Der goldene Pierrot , which took place on March 31, 1934.

Jöken left recordings with the brands Kristall , Tri-Ergon and Tempo .

Jöken was a long-time and popular guest on the radio. He also appeared in several sound films, including the 1930 comedy Das Kabinett des Dr. Larifari .

After the Second World War, Karl Jöken was able to continue his singing career. In 1956 he was still engaged at the Hamburg Operettenhaus .

From 1923 Jöken was first married to the actress and cabaret artist Käte König, known as Käte Jöken-König (1898–1968), and his second marriage to the actress and singer Edith Schollwer (February 17, 1905 to October 1, 2002) who became known in Berlin as a cabaret artist with Günter Neumanns Insulanern after 1945 .

Karl Jöken died on April 7, 1971 in Hamburg. He was buried in the main cemetery in Krefeld.
