Karl Rudolf von Glan (born April 11, 1768 in Thunum , † November 22, 1849 in Breslau ) was a Prussian major general and commandant of the fortress Glatz .

Life

His parents were the captain of the Dutch guard Johann Gustav Karl von Glan (* February 17, 1724 - March 19, 1780) and his wife Isabella Christiane, née Müller (* January 29, 1747 - October 19, 1771), a daughter the bailiff of Esens Gottfried Heinrich Müller (1709-1765).

career

Glan first attended the Latin school in Esens and then the Kadetthaus in Berlin . On June 21, 1785 he was employed as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Götzen" of the Prussian army . There Glan advanced to secondary lieutenant until mid-January 1789 and took part in the battles near Pyzdry during the campaign in Poland in 1794/95 .

On October 7, 1787 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and on February 3, 1801 to staff captain. As captain and company commander , he fought in the Fourth Coalition War in the battle of Jena . After the surrender at Anklam, it was made inactive, but soon replaced and fought in the defense of the Silberberg fortress . There he was on April 1, 1807 commander of the newly established National Battalion "von Glan".

On February 17, 1809, Glan was transferred to the 2nd Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 12 . There he became major on May 27, 1810 and came on April 11, 1811 as commander of the Silesian Grenadier Battalion. During the Wars of Liberation he was badly wounded in the Battle of Großgörschen and was awarded the Iron Cross II class and the Order of Saint Anna II class. After his recovery he was no longer fit for military service and was therefore commissioned on January 10, 1814 to take on the business as the commandant of the Silberberg Fortress . In this position he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 31, 1815 . From November 27, 1817, Glan acted as the commandant of Glatz and became a colonel in early April 1818. On March 20, 1834, he received his departure with the character of a major general and an annual pension of 1750 thalers. On October 28, 1841 he was senior of the Iron Cross, 2nd class. He died in Breslau on November 22, 1849.

General von Zieten wrote in his assessment of Glan in 1819: “With high honesty and constant endeavor to fully fulfill his official duties, he has the service knowledge necessary for his post, is strict, but humane, is respected by the garrison and the citizens alike . "

family

Glan married Sophie Karoline Dorothea von Bamberg on September 29, 1804 in Landeck (born March 18, 1770 - January 21, 1831), widow of Colonel Karl Christian Erdmann von Bamberg († March 26, 1793). The couple had several children:
